[The experts confirm the improvement in the quality of the waters in the Port of Cartagena (03/01/2021)

Caring for the environment is present in all actions of the port activity with the aim of being the most sustainable port in the Mediterranean.

The Port of Cartagena has verified in its annual report a very good quality of its waters, after the controls carried out in nine points that confirm the significant improvement in the last decade, both in the quality of the waters and in the sediment marine, as reported by the president of the Cartagena Port Authority, Yolanda Muñoz.

After the study carried out by the Port Authority, Muñoz explained that "the data reflect a transparency between 5 and 7 in the Cartagena dock and 21 meters deep in the Escombreras dock, and they continue to confirm since 2012 the absence of hydrocarbons in the water, which demonstrates the rigor and effectiveness of the technical measures implemented for the operation of ships with liquid bulk, and the control and surveillance of the delivery of oily liquid waste from ships ".

The president highlighted the Port Authority's commitment to environmental sustainability, through monthly quality controls in port waters that, once a year, include sediment control.

"All our actions are aimed at protecting the environment and reducing the environmental impacts of port activity, through an efficient and effective management that takes care of our environment within our goal of becoming a Port more It is green and within the Sustainable Development goals that we are promoting throughout the port community ".

These measurements, carried out by Laboratorios Munuera SL, a company that has EMAS registration and accredited experience in water quality control and work in the marine environment, are part of the Port Waters Environmental Surveillance Plan that has been carried out since 2012 , which include both the internal waters of the docks and the external anchorage waters, allowing to visualize the evolution of the biological quality of the waters, the marine sediment, as well as to study the algae communities present in the intertidal zone from Escombreras to Cabo Tiñoso.

The report indicates that the environment has a very good quality of port waters, with dissolved oxygen values ??averaging over 103%, even reaching 109%; turbidity with values ??between 0.1 and 1.8 NTU.

The value established as the maximum potential limit is <4 NTU.

Regarding transparency, in the Cartagena dock there are levels between 5 and 7 meters deep, between 9 and 15 meters in the Escombreras dock and visibility up to 23 meters in the rest, with the absence of hydrocarbons on the surface.

These controls must be added to the control carried out on the seabed through images to verify the absence of any invasive species; the cleaning of the water table by the Pelicam vessel since 2003; the study on the presence of microplastics present in the waters, through the UPCT; the study on the effect of underwater noise; studies on the biological communities on the seabed of Cala Cortina and Isla de Escombreras and, above all, studies on avifauna and reproductive species on Isla de Escombreras, Isla de Las Palomas and the surroundings of the Bay of Cartagena, which have been held since 2010.
