[The Roman Theater Museum proposes to celebrate Christmas with the family with the Bona Saturnalia activity (15/12/2020)

| As every year, they prepare a very special visit where visitors will begin a guided tour with an introduction to the traditions and customs of the holidays of the Saturnalia | The Roman Theater Museum of Cartagena offers, for yet another year, the possibility of celebrating Christmas with the family with a very special visit.

During this visit, you will learn how the Romans celebrated the Saturnalia festivities that coincide in time with our Christmases.

In the Merry Christmas, Bona Saturnalia activity, visitors will begin their guided tour with an introduction to the traditions and customs of the Saturnalia festivals. Saturnalia were celebrated in honor of Saturn, god of agriculture.

They began on December 17 with a festive public banquet (lectisternium) and, to the massive shout of "Io, Saturnalia", candles (cerei) were lit to celebrate the end of the darkest period of the year and the birth of the new period of light. These Roman festivals were celebrated with large banquets and it was traditional to give oneself gifts such as: candles, clay figurines, bags with nuts or even money.

The typical dessert eaten during these festivities was buns with honey, a 'bean' was hidden inside.

The lucky man who had the bean in his bun was crowned Princeps Saturnalicius, and the others had to obey his orders. This is followed by a tour of the Museum Rooms, where more details of the festivities will be discovered by Augustus himself, who was excited to give the most diverse gifts at Saturnalia.

The activity will end at the Roman Theater, where visitors will be offered a musical piece with percussion instruments, and thus check the building's acoustics. All this, and other curiosities, will be discovered in this activity organized by the Museum of the Roman Theater at 11:30 am.

The days: December 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31, and January 2, 3, 4 and 5.

The activity is recommended for families with children. The activity will be carried out for groups of a maximum of 15 people, with a price of 3 euros per person (the same price for adults and children).
