[Cartagena and the PYME HOPU pioneers in European innovation to promote the use of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data (11/12/2020)

Both entities hold Spanish participation in the ODALA project, the new European Network for Smart Cities, with funding of 2.3 million euros from the European Commission.

A consortium of 15 members of the European Union, including municipalities, research companies and organizations, has recently launched the ODALA project, an initiative funded by the European Commission that aims to promote the use of of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in order to facilitate and speed up decision-making in public administrations.

ODALA is a European initiative to value data in cities and promote its exchange between different countries.

Its mission is to create a large data market formed by what is known in the Smart Cities sector as a data lake.

This will serve as an open source of information, where any European administration can dump its data sources on air quality, public transport management, smart parking, statistics, local economy, among others and compare and share them with any other European city.

This initiative is contextualized within the framework of Smart Cities, a sector in a continuous process of innovation and growth, which is focusing on the use of data as a source of knowledge for citizens.

In this way, ODALA seeks to facilitate the implementation of data-based and open source tools in the different European countries.

With this horizon, the ODALA project was born, "Collaborative, Secure, and Replicable Open Source Data Lakes for Smart Cities", an initiative co-financed by the Commission.

European with a budget of 2.3 million.

The involvement of the European Union is essential as ODALA will be developed under the umbrella of the Digital Services of the European Union (DSI) 'Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Building Blocks', a tool developed by the Commission n to empower the EU's single digital market, providing cross-border digital infrastructure and services.

The CEO of the Spanish company HOPU based in Ceut , Antonio J.

Jara, explained that "the 'data lake' concept consists in that all cities develop a common initiative and share data to create a sustainable solution in Key areas such as climate change and sustainable mobility " "The launch of ODALA will allow municipalities and international organizations not only to share their data in a secure way, but also to benefit from the digital transformation that will mean having access to the resulting Big Data.

In fact, it will favor competitiveness and local economy, people's quality of life and will stimulate the creation of new market niches ", said Jara.

HOPU IN ODALA The ODALA project brings together a total of 15 partners from Belgium, Germany, Finland, France and Spain such as the cities of Heidelberg (Germany), Saint-Quentin (France), companies such as Sirus (Belgium), Contrasec (Finland) and organizations such as the FIWARE Foundation (Germany), among others.

Spanish participation in the project is represented by HOPU and the Cartagena City Council, both from the Region of Murcia, thus contributing the experience carried out in the development of the potential of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Big Data to contribute to the urban environment and bring cities to their smartest version.

The collaboration of HOPU and the Cartagena City Council towards a Smart City model based on FIWARE technology has boosted Spanish participation in the ODALA project.

HOPU recently received the Le Monde 2020 Urban Innovation Award thanks to the work of implementing a technology that allows the collection of a multitude of high-precision data on the environment, such as gas emissions, particles , heat islands, influx of people, etc.

for a sustainable management of the municipality.

These data allow us to develop a complete picture of the challenges both in the city of Cartagena and in the other cities in which HOPU has developed Smart technology, such as La Palma, Madrid, Mechelen, Cartagena, Helsinki and moreover, helping urban planners to make informed decisions.
