Multiple command to improve the quality of life of children with intellectual disabilities (03/12/2020)

| Industrial and Telecommunication researchers develop the HANDY-BLOG project with ASTUS: Open repository for the design of devices aimed at rehabilitation and sensory stimulation | Being able to open or close a door from a wheelchair, raise or lower a blind, turn on the heating, activate a column of water with small fish and lights or learn to identify objects through touch with the tree of the senses.

These are some of the rehabilitation actions that the users of the ASTUS early care center, the Guardianship Association of Persons with Disabilities of Cartagena, will learn thanks to a project carried out by researchers from the UPCT with funding from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).The year-long project will allow children and people with intellectual disabilities and / or cerebral palsy to benefit from handling 3D printers, manipulating objects with Arduino or automating the home through home automation solutions to improve the quality of life.Researchers Pedro Díaz, Juan Suardíaz and José Alfonso Vera, from the Department of Automation, Electrical Engineering and Electronic Technology, and Fernando Cerdán, from the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, train parents through this project in numerous issues addressed to improve the lives of children with cerebral palsy or intellectual disability.

Among them, being able to design a toy so that the little one can play, or entertain himself while he performs his rehabilitation sessions.Through this project, UPCT researchers try to find solutions adapted to the rehabilitation that the child needs: motor, intellectual and also appropriate for all ages.

“The most important thing is that families can automate and control objects, make personalized toys through 3D printers, explains Pedro Díaz, responsible researcher. All the developments of the Handy-blog project, an open repository for the design of devices aimed at rehabilitation and sensory stimulation (reference FCT-18-13637) will be in use next December.

FECYT subsidizes this action with 5,700 euros. The president of ASTUS, Joaquín Barberá has shown the satisfaction of the association with HANDY-BLOG.

“The benefits for the children will be very important.

Researchers have a high level.

Some of them have been collaborating with ASTUS for quite some time, ”he says.

In addition, Barberá, who chairs Plena Inclusión Región de Murcia, highlights the involvement of professionals and parents in the project.
