UGT and CCOO denounce the interference of the mayor of Cartagena in the municipal union elections (21/10/2020)

Once again, CCOO and UGT denounce interference by Ana Belén Castejón, Mayor of the Cartagena City Council to weaken the representation of the workers of the local corporation, at the gates of the union elections that will take place in just a few days.

The UGT and CCOO have already denounced that on September 9, the City Council's website encouraged the vote towards a certain union, with clear damage to the rest of the organizations. Last Friday, October 16, we again verified that the Mayor had ordered the publication of the bases of the internal promotion contest for administrative assistants for the municipality of Cartagena, to immediately meet with the SIME union and indicate to the media that it was an exclusive demand of this union.

From CCOO and UGT we have missed that this decision had been informed to all unions in a meeting of the Negotiation Table, especially after the last months of complicated negotiations. We must say that the internal promotion of the public employees of the Cartagena City Council is the culmination of a joint demand of all the unions present in the City Council together with the tenacity of the assistants themselves, who had previously managed to unlock the offer of public employment of the municipality for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. For the UGT and CCOO, this fact violates the legal regulations on union elections, and is clearly an interference by the Mayor, who partially looks at minority unions, with the clear intention of weakening other class unions, after months of disagreements due to the lack of waistline of the departmental city government team, the closure when it comes to negotiating historical demands of municipal staff and their impact on the 2020 municipal budget. From CCOO and UGT we denounce once again this attitude of the Mayor of Cartagena and we announce that we are going to take legal action for what we consider an interested interference and a manifest illegality that is not worthy of a municipal leader who should defend the interests of its administered and its workers. The general secretaries of the UGT and CCOO, Antonio Jiménez and Santiago Navarro, respectively, denounce that if they continue the interference and attempts to unbalance the process of union elections, breaking the neutrality that is due to them, they will proceed to file a lawsuit for violation of rights fundamental, in defense of the legitimate rights of workers and their representatives, something that the Mayor should know and practice.
