The consolidation works of the Caballero de Despeñaperros Fort are put out to tender (18/10/2020)

| The project, which has a budget close to 80,000 euros, is included in the Comprehensive Recovery Plan for the historic center that was launched at the beginning of this year | The works for the consolidation of the walls and the ornamentation of the crown of the Fort of the Knight of Despeñaperros are already in the bidding phase.

The execution of the rehabilitation works of this fortification located in the heart of the city of Cartagena has a budget close to 80,000 euros, to which must be added the 14,762 euros for the drafting of the project, which was awarded last month of August.It should be remembered, as explained by the mayor and head of the Archaeological Heritage area, Ana Belén Castejón, that the aforementioned fortress has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1997 “so the consolidation of the walls, which will prevent the progressive degradation of one of the architectural elements that make our old town unique is a priority for our Government ”.Currently, the Cartagena City Council is waiting for the approval of the Master Plan by the General Directorate of Cultural Assets, which will allow the drafting of a more comprehensive rehabilitation project in this BIC, for its subsequent enhancement.Cleaning and consolidation works include:- Application of biocide by manual means.- Mechanical removal of all the vegetation that crowns the structure.- Elimination of grouts of cement, plaster or mixed mortars, in short, materials added over time.- Mechanical dry and wet cleaning.- Selection of sands for the lime mortar and tests to check color and dry hardness.- Masonry factory grouting and irregular filler, with colored lime mortar and flush and washed joint.- Punctual replacement of masonry.- Consolidation with inorganic consolidating treatments.- Sealing cracks where necessary, low level to prevent it from being a focus of future alterations.The consolidation work of some vertical walls will require the use of specialized machinery to carry out work at height and, therefore, it will have its mandatory safety study.

"These works, which have the approval of the General Directorate of Cultural Assets, are part of the Comprehensive Recovery Plan of the Old Town, which was launched at the beginning of this year and with which it is intended to completely remodel and thus put an end to the urban, economic and social problems that the area has dragged on for years ”, stated the mayor.This plan, whose first phase already has a degree of compliance of 80% with an investment that exceeds 2 million euros, also includes the works on Saura Street, whose works have just been awarded by the water concession company; Calle Subida San Diego, currently in tender; reform of the tourist office of the Puertas de San José already in execution; the second phase of the Amphitheater, also in progress; the square in front of Sister Francisca Armendáriz in execution; the Isaac Peral House-Museum is up for tender, as well as the Council Chapel and the Forum Neighborhood Museum that is already underway.
