Letter to the Mayor of Popayan, in the context of October 12 (10/10/2020)

Letter sent by the Heroes de Cavite Cultural Association to the Mayor of Popayán (Colombia) two weeks ago, in the context of the demolition of the statue of the Spanish conqueror, Sebastián Belalcazar in the city of Popayán, and that by reason of October 12 we want to do public, for us, for the 500 million Spanish speakers who are the world's second language speakers, this October 12 is an opportunity to value the great cultural heritage that unites us, the world and Spain would no longer be what same after that October 12, 1492.Feel proud of your culture and your history, celebrate this October 12, take your flag out to the balcony, publish it on social networks and wear clothes with the national emblem in public, now more than ever, since our flag must be normalized and our history in the face of the attacks they are suffering inside and outside our borders.A / A Mayor of Popayán  Good afternoon,  I am Ángel Gabriel Benzal Pintado, president of the Heroes de Cavite Cultural Association, based in Cartagena, Spain.

I dare to send you this in relation to the events that occurred in relation to the statue of Sebastián de Belalcázar in Popayán.I point out that my city is closely linked to Colombia, through Cartagena de Indias, but this is not the only thing that unites us, because 500 years ago we Spaniards arrived in the area of ??present-day Colombia, a meeting between cultures and people of whom an enriching one would emerge, bearing fruit in present-day Colombia.

It is history, our history, yours and mine.

We have recently finished the Carthaginian and Roman festivals, the latter people who conquered the Iberian Peninsula.

Personally, I am proud of my Iberian, Carthaginian or Roman heritage, from which my culture comes and even the common language that we share.

I live in a city with a great archaeological heritage in which every time an architectural remains or a Roman statue is found, it is a cause for celebration among its inhabitants.

As you well know, the laws of the Kings of Spain protected the natives, as reflected in the testament of Isabel la Católica or the Laws of the Indies.

I am aware of the social pressure to which you will be subjected with this issue and that is why, showing your commitment to the preservation of the mestizo history of your city and its traditions, I dare to suggest that in the event that If the statue of Sebastián de Belalcázar is moved, it would be appreciated if it were in one of the most popular square, so that Colombians can continue to evoke that part of their history and remember that past that unites us.In life we ??have to make decisions and we can always choose to do the right thing.Receive a cordial greeting from this side of the Old World forever twinned with your beautiful Colombian land.I thank you for the attention and time given to our letter.Thank you very much.Angel Gabriel Benzal Painted  President of the Heroes de Cavite Cultural AssociationCartagena, Spain
