Cartagena City Council joins the fight against sexual exploitation and human trafficking (23/09/2020)

| On the occasion of the commemoration of the international day, it launches a campaign that affects public awareness to fight against this scourge | Cartagena City Council launches its first campaign against trafficking in women and girls.

Thus, on the occasion of the International Day against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking in Persons, which is commemorated this Wednesday, September 23, the Consistory, through the Department of Equality, launches' Are you an accessory to trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and girls? Surely you don't.

'The objective of this campaign is to raise awareness among the people of Cartagena about this problem.

"Citizen intolerance is the beginning of the end of Trafficking in women and girls," said the Councilor for Equality, David Martínez. The commemoration of this international day has been celebrated since 1999, when it was promulgated by the World Conference of the Coalition against Trafficking in Persons, in coordination with the Women's Conference, in Dhaka, Bangladesh.“On September 23 we remember that human trafficking is the slavery of the 21st century: It consists of the purchase, sale and exploitation of people for various destinations, among which the most frequent is sexual exploitation of girls and women, and represents a violation of fundamental human rights ”, recalled David Martínez."Human traffickers take advantage of situations of poverty, lack of education, natural disasters, wars and other circumstances, to steal children and women and sell them to the mafias through deception," said the mayor. In this way, the Cartagena City Council, through the Department of Equality, maintains among its priorities the fight against violence against women and girls.

Specifically, this effort has been translated into initiatives such as the First Plan Against Gender Violence, which was approved at the beginning of the year and which identifies trafficking as a form of violence. The plan defines three strategies to work against violence against women: information and prevention; direct intervention and institutional coordination. In terms of prevention, the Educational Programs for Prevention and Awareness that are taught among Secondary and Baccalaureate students stand out, with whom education in values ??and against violence against women is worked.“We believe it is essential that our young people know the origin and consequences of the different types of violence, of a reality to which they are exposed at an ever younger age.

We also understand that we must prioritize in the educational field, since as studies in Spain show, tolerance increases in young people towards prostitution and this normalization can make it easier for trafficking to remain invisible.

For this reason, campaigns on Trafficking in women and girls are very important ”, remarked the Councilor for Equality. The first International Congress on Trafficking in Persons for the Purposes of Sexual Exploitation will be held in Cartagena on September 30 and October 1 at the El Batel Auditorium organized by the Autonomous Community through the Ministry of Women, Equality, LGTBI, Families and Social Policy, with the collaboration of the Cartagena City Council, the UPCT and various social entities.
