Ethnographic Museum of the Ports of Santa Bárbara, finally a reality (22/09/2020)

| It has opened its doors with an attractive exhibition on traditional life in the west of Cartagena | The project will provide a cultural, social and tourist boost in the municipality and throughout the Campoder area.Visits are free and can be arranged through the Cartagena City Council tourist website. The headquarters of the Association of Neighbors of Los Puertos de Santa Bárbara, in the municipality of Cartagena, for many years hosted a space full of ethnographic materials that spoke much and well of a traditional way of life and customs worthy of being preserved and put in value.

In 2018, the Cartagena City Council presented in Campoder a request for help to transform this space into a museum that can be visited, bright, rich in nuances and attractive to the visitor. There has been an important transformation that has been carried out both inside its facilities and outside the property, leaving spaces visually differentiated according to name of location, economic activity, esparto, domestic and cultural life of the rural world, showing thus the importance of culture and tradition in rural areas. The protection and conservation of the extensive rural heritage of the Campoder territory and raising awareness in the preservation of the signs of territorial identity of the rural population is completely necessary if you want to build the future in the rural environment of the Region of Murcia and, more specifically, in the scope of action of the Campoder Rural Development Association, which manages all or part of 8 municipalities in Campo de Cartagena, Campo de Murcia and Valle del Guadalentín.This project is intended to value the great cultural heritage that was inventoried in an inadequate and very deteriorated building.

The material that this museum collects addresses different areas related to the life, customs, folklore and traditions of the society that once inhabited the Campo de Cartagena.

The adaptation of this building as a contemporary exhibition space causes a renovation of the interior architecture and a small extension of the building. The museum project has been carried out by the Eventi Tutti company and the works have consisted of an expansion of the existing space by more than 40 square meters, adaptation of access for people with reduced mobility, air conditioning of the premises, as well as the complete electrical installation.

Its interior houses around 250 pieces, selected from a wide catalog that ensures the renewal of the exhibition with new ethnographic elements. With an adequate layout, a modern exhibition aesthetics and expressive didactic arguments of the material and immaterial aspects of rural life in the western area of ??Campo de Cartagena, it is ensured that everyone who visits it can know and learn about the culture, the work, education and the traditions of Campo de Cartagena.A carriage porch has been installed outside the building, in which there are two carriages and an old manger, items that due to their large dimensions cannot be placed inside the museum and which announce a very interesting sample of our rich rural heritage. The museum has been included in the tourist routes of the municipality of Cartagena, within its singular heritage, together with the municipal archive, the Molinete archaeological park, the fish market and the rectory building.Visits are free and must be previously arranged through the Cartagena tourism website.

This project has involved an investment of 125,000 euros of which 50,000 correspond to the Leader aid processed through Campoder within its participatory local development strategy "Campoder Territory, growing together".The aforementioned Leader aid is co-financed by the European Union, through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, and the Region of Murcia, through the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, within the framework of the Program of Rural Development of the Region of Murcia 2014-2020.
