Two ships load 9,300 tons of scrap this week (03/09/2020)

| The traffic of this merchandise has increased almost 50% so far this year |  Throughout this week, two vessels, the Northwester with the Vanuatu flag and the MSM Dolores with the Cyprus flag, loaded 9,300 tons of scrap that the Cartagena company Hermanos Ingles exports to Turkey and Portugal. The Northwester ship is docked at the Multipurpose dock, with a length of 103 meters, it sailed on August 20 from Istanbul and will return to this port with 5,800 tons of scrap.

For its part, the MSM Dolores ship, from the French port Port La Nouvelle, is destined for Portugal and will carry 3,500 tons of the same merchandise For the president, Yolanda Muñoz, "one of the merchandise with a more than positive trend are those related to iron scrap.

So far this year, more than 14,000 tons have been moved compared to 9,300 in the same period of the previous year.

with an increase of almost 50%.

To get an idea in a week the same tons will be exported as during the first seven months of 2019 ". The president of the Port of Cartagena assured that the growth in this type of traffic is due "to the rebound in steel consumption in countries like Turkey where a lot is being built.

They buy scrap to turn it into steel." She added that Cartagena's strategic position and the competitiveness offered by the Port Authority "with its rates and services, represent an opportunity to advance in new lines of business and a tool at the service of regional companies." Most of the scrap metal exports carried out by the Port of Cartagena comes from Grupo Inglés, a group of companies dedicated to the recycling of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, located in Pozo Estrecho.

In addition, it is certified under the international standards ISO 14001 for Environmental Management, ISO 9001 for Quality Management, as well as ISO 45001 for Occupational Risk Prevention. Francisco Inglés, representing Grupo Hnos.

Inglés, has indicated that "thanks to the commitment of the Cartagena Port Authority with companies like ours, last year we exported 36,000 tons of scrap to various countries, mainly to Turkey.

This year already we have exceeded that amount and more than 40,000 tons have left our company ".

He also indicated that they are united by the environmental commitment of both companies "we strictly comply with the protocol that the Port Authority has established for this type of merchandise to prevent the spread of dust and metal particles in suspension." Two pollutant measurement stations have recently been installed in Escombreras in order to optimize the efficiency of port activities, promote environmental sustainability and reduce the impact of operations.

"It is necessary to make the movement of solid bulks compatible with the maintenance of adequate levels of air quality in the environment, and these stations are a very useful tool since they measure in real time the emission levels of PM10 particles in operation with this type of traffic, serving as the basis for decision-making related to this operation, "concluded Yolanda Muñoz.
