The Port Authority improves and increases the environmental control of the city and its surroundings (26/08/2020)

| With the acquisition of two pollutant measuring stations | Installed in Escombreras, they measure particle emission levels in real timeIn order to optimize the efficiency of port activities, promote environmental sustainability and reduce the impact of operations, all based entirely on digitization, the Cartagena Port Authority has installed two pollutant measuring stations in Escombreras that have involved an investment of 456,000 euros. The president, Yolanda Muñoz, has indicated that "we are aware of the need to make the movement of solid bulks compatible with the maintenance of adequate levels of air quality in the environment, for this reason we have installed these two measuring stations that together with the effort that we are doing in digitization, allows us to inform users, customers and neighbors about environmental parameters in real time ".This equipment has been installed in Escombreras, specifically one of them replaces the one located between the Príncipe Felipe and Isaac Peral docks.

The pollutant measuring station monitors, among others, the levels of dust (PM10) that are generated in the operation with solid bulks.

This station also has SO2, CO, NO, NO2, NOx level analyzers and a meteorological station.

It has management software and communications and computer equipment, and it is a very useful tool for measuring PM10 particle emission levels in real time in operations with this type of traffic, serving as a basis for making related decisions with this operation. The other station has been installed in the expansion of Escombreras for the measurement in this area where the highest traffic of solid bulks takes place, with a considerable increase in recent years and which registered loads and unloadings throughout 2019 close to 7 millions of tons.

In this way, effective monitoring of the dust emissions that may be generated is achieved.

In addition, anticipating the new regulations on air quality that will be imposed in the short term, the new pollutant measuring station will be equipped with a PM2.5 particle analyzer. For the president, "the air quality data confirm that the operational measures implemented for the proper handling of solid bulks, together with the daily monitoring of immission levels and the commitment shown by stevedoring companies to modernize their means, they are the appropriate tool to guarantee that the handling of solid bulks in the Port of Cartagena is carried out in a safe way for the health of people and the ecosystem, for the city and its surroundings ".The installed real-time measurement and control systems allow to act on operations that due to adverse weather conditions (with winds above 30 km / h with a certain direction) emit high levels of particles, ordering the paralysis of the same until the conditions improve, reducing the dispersion of particles and preventing dust from affecting the health of workers, nearby populations or the environment. This and the rest of the environmental actions have turned the Port of Cartagena into a benchmark enclave for the Spanish Port System in terms of environmental management, being an example of an exploitation model committed to sustainability.

"The actions implemented are included in the Immediate Action Plan for Economic Recovery and are aimed at optimizing the efficiency of port activities, promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the impact of operations, all based entirely on digitization" stressed the president. The action is framed in the Immediate Action Plan for Economic Reactivation, endowed with 200 million, "our commitment is to integrate sustainability in the management of port infrastructure since it is a key element to ensure our contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals A firm commitment that we extrapolate to our relationship with the community in order to achieve a more sustainable port ", concluded Yolanda Muñoz.
