UPCT is leading a European project to transform higher education institutions in Nepal and Bhutan into sustainable universities (24/08/2020)

It receives close to one million euros to help these Himalayan countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) will lead the European B + NESDG project that will train the universities of Nepal and Bhutan to that play a fundamental role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are most relevant to these countries. This academic initiative will transform the higher education institutions of these two countries, nestled in the Himalayas, into sustainable universities. The three-year initiative has obtained funding close to one million euros from the European Commission.Nine universities from four countries in Europe and Asia participate.

The project includes international mobility activities for professors, students, and administration and service personnel from the universities participating in the project."These international meetings will foster the exchange of different perspectives and knowledge on vital issues for the development of these countries and will enrich the educational experience," says the researcher in charge, Ruth Herrero, professor in the Department of Thermal and Fluid Engineering at the UPCT.

“Although Nepal and Bhutan are firmly committed to the principle of leaving no one behind and equitable access to quality higher education is a priority objective, there are imbalances in access to education and very few students from disadvantaged groups are able to access it.

to higher education ”, recalls the researcher."Being a man or a woman, disability, class, caste, religion, ethnicity or geographical origin translate into inequality factors that limit access to higher education," Herrero adds.

The UPCT professor adds that the project will promote inclusion in Bhutan and Nepal, promoting improvements in the conditions of access and equity. It will also take into account issues of inclusion, diversity. It will promote the participation of the most disadvantaged groups through a strategy with an inclusive and gender perspective."Although the SDGs are equally important, indivisible and common to all countries, their priorities are specific to each country, according to the level, the gaps and the development structure," Herrero explains.

Lacking international support, Nepal and Bhutan, nestled in the Himalayas, which in Sanskrit means “residence in the snow”, would not be able to create their own institutions that can guide their policy at the national level towards sustainable development.
