The Department of Health reinforces the actions on the coast and the councils to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes (22/08/2020)

| The pest control concessionaire company detects an increase in cases in the surroundings of the Calblanque salt flats after the filling of ponds to protect the fartet | The Health area, led by the Deputy Mayor and Councilor, Manuel Padín, has reinforced actions against the proliferation of mosquitoes in coastal areas, through the concessionary company of the municipal pest control service; and in neighborhoods and councils, through the shock plan coordinated with the Department of Decentralization.According to reports from the area, disinsection work on the Mar Menor coastline has been intensified "to reduce the impact of mosquitoes due to the change produced by the increase in the water table that has caused continuous flooding in unusual areas."The pest control service has focused the reinforcement of its actions in two lines of work.

On the one hand, constant and fluid communication has been maintained with other administrations and with owners of the affected areas, especially considering that the large number of these areas is a protected area and the treatments must be done manually and with biological products.

exclusive. On the other hand, the service concessionaire company has detected new outbreaks and has implemented extraordinary treatments, for which meetings were held with the General Directorate of Natural Environment and the clearing of the roads was requested to facilitate access to the affected areas, since some sources were inaccessible, and speed up the processing of permits and authorizations.

In this sense, since spring the flooded areas of Carmolí, Lo Poyo and the channels of the Salinas de Marchamalo have been treated, regardless of their ownership. However, in recent days, the Cartagena City Council has detected a rebound in adult mosquito warnings in the areas of Playa Honda, Playa Paraíso, Cala Reona, Cala Flores and the beginning of La Manga.

According to reports from the pest control concession company, due to the reinforcement treatments described above, this rebound does not correspond to any of the areas controlled by the City Council. After a study of the situation, it has been detected that the new mosquito proliferation focus is in the old Salinas del Rasall, within the Calblanque regional park, as was corroborated by a visit by the company's technicians to the zone with Park Access and Maintenance staff and Natural Environment technicians, the body responsible for pest control within the protected environment. The problem detected is in the filling of the ponds of the park to protect the fartet, which the regional government put into operation a few days ago, thus reducing the salinity of the waters.

This has caused the ideal conditions for the proliferation of the mosquito to be generated in the area.

As these rafts are not treated correctly with biological larvicides, it has led to the hatching of the larvae, causing the discomfort observed in residents and tourists from nearby populations, since the mosquito can travel up to 10 kilometers. The concessionaire company has intensified the actions in the inhabited areas near the regional park, but the Health area has already contacted Medio Natural to act in the focus, in order to avoid greater inconvenience to residents, more even when the summer tourism campaign is at its peak.SHOCK PLANThe reinforcement actions carried out by the concessionaire company of the pest control service, are added to the shock plan launched from the Health and Decentralization areas last May.

This week we are proceeding with the fifth and last round of this extraordinary contract that has been developed during the last four months in urban areas of neighborhoods and county councils throughout the municipality.Once completed, the work against the proliferation of the mosquito will continue with the actions of the concession company, which maintains continuous disinsectations and prevention services with door-to-door visits informing residents of the areas where outbreaks are detected, inspecting the interior of homes and advising residents on actions that can prevent the proliferation of the tiger mosquito.

In this sense, the sampling of the Entomological Network provided by the Ministry of Health is also carried out biweekly. Likewise, weekly larvicide reviews and treatments will continue throughout the year throughout the municipality, with special interest after rains; and action will be taken against the adult mosquito when its presence is detected, always with authorized products that are compatible with the protection of the Environment.
