Carmina Fernández demands the cessation of occurrences on a matter as serious as the polluting waste of the Sierra Minera (20/08/2020)

| It is essential to act at the source of the pollution and demand that the owners and administrations act now to prevent it | The rainwater collector announced by the city council moves the problem from one place to another, seriously harms the Mar Menor and may even incur criminal liability The socialist deputy Carmina Fernández has declared that "the Cartagena City Council plans to divert rainwater contaminated with mining waste that circulates through the Llano del Beal towards the Rambla de Mendoza that goes directly to the Mar Menor, ignoring that the dumping of Mining waste is subject to a special and specific management regime according to current regulations ". "This is a new improvisation of the Cartagena City Council that, faced with serious problems that require a vision and a comprehensive solution, announces patches and improvises with sloppy works on such important issues as the Mar Menor or the decontamination of the Sierra Minera", Fernández highlighted From the PSRM-PSOE we demand that the occurrences and improvised announcements that do not solve the problems at their origin and definitively in the mining mountains, nearby towns and the Mar Menor cease.

The action announced by the City Council only transfers the problem from one place to another, worsening in this case, the situation of the Mar Menor. The socialist deputy has clarified that "this is what we are accustomed to, unfortunately, both the Regional administration and the Cartagena City Council, issues as important as polluting waste in Cartagena and the region and the Mar Menor, where, far from having a global vision of these problems, they go to leap by way of improvising advertisements, photos and projects, installed in the short term and the easy headline without foreseeing the consequences of their actions ". The proposal made by the Cartagena City Council proposing a new discharge into the Mar Menor, this time of metals and waste materials from the Sierra Minera through a promenade, "is not only irresponsible, but may constitute an environmental crime" Fernández has indicated. It is essential to find a solution to the environmental problems and the floods that occur in the Llano del Beal, but not at the cost of making new polluting discharges to the Mar Menor.

"While everyone strives to find solutions at the origin of the problems of the Mar Menor and the Sierra Minera, eliminating waste, the City of Cartagena acts improvised and without any vision," the socialist deputy denounced. Carmina Fernández has also highlighted that "the runoff produced by the rains in the Llano del Beal carry polluting materials and waste from the Sierra Minera, the solution to these discharges is not to divert them to the bed of a promenade that goes directly to the Sea Minor to avoid passing through a population center but to act at the source of the contamination.

" The owners of the land and those who cause the contamination of the mountains must, "once and for all, decontaminate with all the guarantees the facilities and deposits with contaminated waste, and the regional administration must demand these actions or act in a subsidiary manner by account of those responsible and imposing coercive fines, as required by law, "concluded the socialist deputy.
