The Torreciega Bridge will improve its accessibility for people with reduced mobility (19/08/2020)

| The Autonomous Community will put out to tender the works after the summer, worth 155,000 euros, to widen the sidewalks of the regional highway bridge | The Torreciega bridge, in Cartagena, will expand the area for pedestrian use in order to improve its accessibility and, therefore, the safety of the citizens who pass through it.

In this way, an accessible itinerary will be created that will guarantee the autonomous and continuous circulation of people with reduced mobility. The Autonomous Community will put out to tender the works after the summer, as confirmed by the counselor of the Development Area, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, to widen the sidewalks of the bridge of the RM-F35 regional highway (Cartagena-San Javier), which accumulates traffic daily average of 5,130 vehicles, of which 369 are heavy. The execution period of the works is three months and they have a budget of 155,000 euros. The deputy mayor and councilor of the Social Welfare Area, Noelia Arroyo recently visited the Torreciega bridge, together with the Minister of Development and Infrastructure, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, the Councilor of the Decentralization Area, Diego Ortera, the District Councilor, Irene Ruiz and the president of the Neighborhood Association, Teodosio Romero. With this action, the width of the existing sidewalks will be doubled, which today are 0.80 meters wide and will become 1.80 meters.

"The first objective of the works is to improve the safety of pedestrians and , for this reason, the width of the sidewalks will be doubled, which will now be one meter eighty and a protection barrier will be installed along the entire pedestrian path ", as explained by the deputy mayor. The works will consist of the demolition of the sidewalks and roads and then proceed to the construction of a wider sidewalk on one of the two sides of the bridge.

"Neighbors gain in safety, but also in accessibility, especially people with disabilities, the elderly and people with baby carriages, who at this time have clear difficulties to walk on sidewalks that measure eighty centimeters," Arroyo highlighted. The deputy mayor has expressed her gratitude to the Minister of Public Works, since this work had to be postponed due to the emergency actions of DANA, therefore "we want to thank that this same year the investment and this project have been recovered in the budgets of the Autonomous Community "concluded the mayor. For his part, the president of the Neighborhood Association, Teodosio Romero, pointed out that "this action responds to a historical demand from the residents of the area, thanks to the close collaboration with the Cartagena City Council to define the best project."In addition to doubling the width of the existing sidewalks, energy-efficient LED lighting will be installed and a bionda will be installed between the sidewalk and the road to increase the safety measures for pedestrians.

Finally, the road pavement will be renovated to improve road traffic and road markings will be repainted.
