The fiber cement removal works begin at the CEIP Santa Florentina de La Palma (23/07/2020)

| The center is the fourth in which this material is eliminated, within the schedule that includes 12 actions between 2020 and 2021 | CEIP Santa Florentina students will return to classrooms without the presence of fiber cement next year.

Today, Thursday, July 23, work has begun to remove this material at the school in La Palma, where a 197-square-meter roof will be replaced.The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, attended this Thursday the start of the works accompanied by the councilor for Education, Irene Ruiz, as well as members of the board and the school's AMPA; the president of FAPA Cartagena, Paqui Galindo; the president of the Zero Asbestos Platform, Juan José Ramos; and the vice president and member of the Neighborhood Board, Mª Carmen Velázquez and Diego Martínez, respectively.The works, which are expected to last for a week and have a budget of 48,000 euros.The mayor thanked the school's AMPA "for their patience and for always being by our side, but also for reminding us how important it is to remove fiber cement from our educational centers.""The works are scheduled to finish in the month of August, or even earlier, but when the school year begins, the work will be finished," said Castejón, who celebrated that "today we make that historic claim to preserve the health of the boys and girls of the La Palma school ".For her part, the AMPA spokesperson for CEIP Santa Florentina, Ana Rosa Moya, has expressed her satisfaction with the implementation of these works that will allow the removal of asbestos from the center.

"It is very good news for the school and for the people," she stressed.The school thus becomes the fourth educational center where infrastructures with this material are removed.

After the completion of the works in the CEIP Feliciano Sánchez, last week the works began in the CEIP José María Lapuerta and Antonio Ulloa.All these centers are included in the list of 12 educational centers in the municipality of Cartagena in which fiber cement roofs will be removed during the biennium 2020-2021, according to the calendar approved this year in collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the City Council from Cartagena.After the approval of this calendar, last January, the Department of Education began working on the draft of the delegation of powers, in order to streamline the replacement of the covers with the presence of this material in schools around the municipality, a document that was approved in May.In this way, the Autonomous Community will finance the works of certain centers, which will be carried out through the municipal services of the Cartagena City Council.

Currently, the municipal technicians are writing the necessary technical documents to proceed to contract new fiber cement removal works in other educational centers in Cartagena and its neighborhoods and councils.
