The new Plaza del Galúa in La Manga will honor the AGA pilots who died last year (17/07/2020)

This is the new Plaza del Galúa, a project framed within the La Manga Abierta 365 strategy, which was inaugurated this Friday and which includes new viewpoints, improvements to beach access, new urban furniture, vegetation and efficient lighting, and that it will pay tribute to the pilots of the General Air Academy who died last year, when they were conducting practice and training flights over the waters of La Manga.The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has participated in this act chaired by the president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando López Miras, and who, in turn, has had the assistance of the Minister of Development, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, of the first mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, the councilor for Infrastructure, María Casajús, and the colonel of the AGA, Manuel de la Chica.Castejón has highlighted the commitment to the pedestrian that has been made in this performance, to which all prominence is restored.

But pedestrians will not be the only protagonists of this unique enclave.

"We want to pay tribute to the staff of the General Air Academy and, especially, to the Eagle Patrol pilots who lost their lives very close to here last year," announced the mayor, who has advanced that in the coming years months, the Cartagena City Council will initiate the administrative file to nominate this viewpoint with the name of AGA.A recognition that the colonel of the AGA has thanked, moved, the Town Hall.

"All recognition of our fallen is a pride for us", Manuel de la Chica has recognized.VIEWPOINTS, WALK AND ACCESS TO THE BEACH, WITH THE LESS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTThe action has involved the creation of 1,500 square meters of space, distributed in new viewpoints and pedestrian routes by the sea, the creation of a grandstand with wooden benches and natural stone stairs, new urban furniture to create shady areas, the improvement access to the viewpoints and the beach for people with reduced mobility, the creation of 400 square meters of vegetation, the renewal of the lighting in the area with 43 LED points and the renewal of the drinking water network and an irrigation network for the new vegetation.With this action, explained the mayor of Cartagena, the intention is to regulate the uncontrolled parking that existed in the area and remove obstacles so that bathers can access the beach without problems, including areas for people with reduced mobility.

"Thus, this magnificent space has become a view of the Mediterranean Sea that can be enjoyed by Cartagena and vacationers," she said."It should be noted that efforts have been made to ensure that the final result has the least possible impact on the environmental environment, and natural materials such as stone or wood have been used for this, and it has been provided with new spaces for shade and LED luminaires" , noted the mayor.With an allocation budget of 786,772 euros, it has been co-financed by the FEDER Funds (80%) and the Autonomous Community (20%).

For its part, the Cartagena City Council has collaborated both with the assignment of the spaces and with the technical supervision of the project and the execution of the work.
