The City Council gives 24 hours to vacate three buildings in La Manga due to the risk of detachment of their facades (10/07/2020)

| The director of the work, who was to be in charge of directing the repairs required by the local administration, announced on July 2 that he was leaving the project | The Cartagena City Council has given 24 hours to vacate and seal three buildings in La Manga due to the risk of parts falling off their facades and the danger that this poses for residents.

The properties are located on the beachfront, on plot number 20 of the Dos Mares building in La Manga, and have 67 apartments, mostly occupied by tenants who enjoy their holidays. These are buildings of between 6 and 7 heights, whose facades are finished off with plates of considerable weight and dimensions of 50 by 70 centimeters each, which are not adequately attached to the wall, posing a danger to those who transit through common areas and even on the terraces on the lower floors. The file of the Department of Urban Planning dates back to July 2011, when the construction company was informed that they had a maximum period of 15 days to chop and clean up all the loose elements that their facades presented.

It should be remembered that most of the properties are now owned by a financial institution, which took over the development shortly after, when the construction company went bankrupt.

In 2015, a court sentenced both the construction company and the architect to repair all the defects that had been detected, also alleging that there were flaws in the building. On July 10 of last year 2019, the municipal technicians returned to the area, since the owners had not justified the works and, when verifying that they had not been carried out, they were reiterated the order to carry them out in 15 days and to vacate the buildings within 24 hours, until the security of the facade elements was restored.

After this, on August 14, the owners sent the City Council a document providing documentation on the direction of the work, as well as the budgets of specialized companies to carry out these works. However, on July 2 of this year, the director of the work informed the City Council that he was renouncing the project and asked that the appropriate measures be taken due to the risk that the facade represents for the safety of people.Given these facts, the municipal technicians have considered that it is essential to vacate the three buildings and close them to prevent anyone from accessing them.

Urban Planning staff and Local Police officers have informed residents that they have 24 hours to vacate the homes, and have given the owners a maximum period of 5 days to completely eliminate the risks presented by the facades.
