Aquae STEM recognizes two schools in Cartagena for their entrepreneurial spirit and creativity in online challenges (17/06/2020)

| The objective of this educational program, integrated into 50 schools in Spain, is to promote STEM vocations among students from 2nd to 6th grade Primary | Hidrogea and Fundación Aquae appreciate the effort made by their students and teachers during the pandemic Hidrogea and its foundation, Fundación Aquae, organized yesterday afternoon, in a virtual way, an act of recognition to value the great work carried out by students, teachers and families during the first course of Aquae STEM, an educational program that aims to promote the interest of students from 2nd to 6th of Primary for STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

An edition in which around 2,500 girls have participated. During the day yesterday, the work carried out by CEIP Virginia Pérez and Vicente Medina, both from Cartagena, was especially recognized.

The first, in which 80 students have participated, has stood out for its creativity in online activity with a solution that solves the challenge posed while incorporating new elements into the story.

For its part, CEIP Vicente Medina, in which 28 students have worked, has been recognized for being the most entrepreneurial center, a school that has excelled in opening the doors to the project, going out to the town and showing all its neighbors the activities and virtues of Aquae STEM. "In a society where scientists and engineers are increasingly important and where technologies are so present in each and every one of the trades, it is essential that STEM be present in all schools and thus promote new vocations.

The project It has been perfectly adapted to the different intelligences and skills of our students, it has made learning very fun and tremendously effective, "explains Professor Iván Marín, from CEIP Virginia Pérez. The CEIP Virginia Pérez and Vicente Medina are two of the eight educational centers that have been recognized, in addition to the quality of their work, for being great representatives of the globality of centers and students participating in the Aquae STEM program, implemented in 50 schools from Spain. "After the closure of the educational centers on March 16, 2.9 million primary education students stopped going to their respective schools.

A situation that did not prevent both the students and the teachers from continuing to work in our program.

To date, we have held several webinars for teachers and students that have allowed them to deepen the operation of the program's digital platform and the contents of their activities through online training sessions, "highlights Mariola Urrea, President of the Strategy Council from Fundación Aquae. "Aquae STEM has emerged reinforced from this crisis situation caused by the coronavirus; a period in which we have continued to promote STEM among girls in a fun and innovative way thanks to the commitment, enthusiasm and participation of the entire Aquae STEM community.

Two Very representative data: 57 projects have been published during confinement and another 435 are in progress, "Urrea stresses. During the confinement, Aquae STEM has continued to be active, promoting the online training of hundreds of teachers and students.

The students have been able to complete the third phase of this program from home thanks to webinars in which they have learned and resolved doubts about Scratch 3.0., A programming language that they use to find sustainable solutions to challenges related to water issues, such as drought or floods. The online challenges represent the 3rd phase of this educational project, after the debate activities (1st phase) and the practical workshops (2nd phase).

In the debates promoted by a teacher, topics such as the current importance of scientific and technological vocations and the people behind the STEM professions are discussed.

In addition, in the practical workshops students discover the applications of STEM through the resolution of a challenge, working on guided projects that are worked on in the classroom.

In the online activity, the students learn programming and share their solutions on the Aquae STEM website. Only 35% of the students enrolled in STEM-related careers in higher education are women, and it is precisely these scientific-technological areas that generate the most employment, according to the report 'Deciphering the Code: The education of girls and Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) ', published by UNESCO in 2019. As Gustavo Calero, Director of Sustainable Development of Hidrogea, points out, "the COVID-19 pandemic is revealing the enormous importance of professionals in the STEM sector, from the telecommunications experts who make it possible for millions of people to telework thanks to the internet; going through specialists in 3D printing, who produce protection screens, masks and even respirators; to professionals specialized in artificial intelligence, who develop automated applications to monitor the temperature of people or drones to control that the population complies with the isolation measures Social". If the evolution of the pandemic allows it, a face-to-face recognition event will be organized in the autumn, in which students and teachers from the ten centers that host Aquae STEM in the Murcia region will participate. About Aquae Foundation Aquae Foundation is the foundation of water.
