Finished the beginning of the conservation works of the crypt of the Byzantine Wall (15/06/2020)

| After the intervention, this site from the 1st century BC may reopen to the public after several years closed | The Conservation and Maintenance works of the structures conserved in the archaeological crypt of the Byzantine Wall exhibition hall, located at the corner of Doctor Tapia and Callejón de la Soledad streets, will begin in the coming days. The intervention is intended to stop the deterioration that the passage of time, some 40 years, and the subsoil humidity have meant for the site, and which make it impractical to open it to the public in all its splendor for a few years. The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, signed last Friday, June 12, the contract for the start of works.

"The sensitivity of this Government for the conservation of our Heritage is once again revealed, giving priority to the recovery of this archaeological gem," he noted. In this basement, musealized in the 80s, when nothing suggested the existence of the Roman Theater, the foundations of a section of the garden's facade wall are preserved, located at the back of the Theater scene with its corresponding exedra, as well as the porticos that delimit this large open space.

The construction of these large-volume structures led to the destruction of a Roman house from which part of the distribution atrium, one of the annexed halls and the staircase to the upper floor are preserved. The works to be undertaken in the coming weeks focus on the cleaning and consolidation of structures from the 1st century BC, in addition to those related to the crypt itself that affect the perimeter walkway that allows visiting the complex, interior lighting and the renewal of the painting of the continent with new museum criteria, in order to focus attention on the old structures, namely, the walls of the portico of the Theater and the destroyed Roman house for its construction. The planned works also contemplate the restoration of the mosaics of the Roman house so, within a few months, they will recover the reddish tones provided by the crushed ceramics with which they were made, in addition to the color of the fragments of Marble inserted on its surface, with which four dolphins are drawn in the atrium and a vegetable garland in the preserved room. The intervention in the archaeological crypt will be completed with the renovation of the painting and the improvement of the electrical installation of the Byzantine Wall exhibition hall itself, where the lighting sources will be modernized to make it more suitable for the exhibition of the works of art that usually houses this room.WORKS IN THE WINDLASSOn the other hand, the Department of Archaeological Heritage, directed by the mayor Ana Belén Castejón, also carries out the repair and conservation works of the real estate conserved in the Park located on the top of the Molinete, which began last June 10 , with an amount of 7,053 euros.“The works consist of the repair of the walls that mark the late-republican era terraces, the accesses and perimeter fences, the replacement of gravel where necessary, as well as a major intervention in the mills.

In addition, we are going to install anti-vandal gates at the entrances to the park ”, highlighted Ana Belén Castejón.The Mills have been subjected to acts of vandalism that have affected both its architectural structure and its interior decoration, where graffiti has been made that has sometimes affected the paintings of the Molino-Ermita de San Cristóbal, as well as the annotations and legends preserved on the walls of the flour mill located at the top.“For this reason, there is no other choice but to put vandal-resistant doors and windows that preserve the preservation of the Good.

Similarly, this project will take care of the cleaning and conservation of all the archaeological remains of the Park ”, the mayor concluded.
