Samanta Schweblin and Eloy Moreno win the Mandarache and Hache 2020 Awards (05/06/2020)

| The fifteenth edition jury, made up of almost 6,000 young readers, has chosen 'Kentukis' and 'Invisible' as winning novels | The Mandarache Project, promoted by the Department of Youth of the Cartagena City Council, ends its 2020 edition with enormous success in participation despite the health crisis.

After a year of reading, the world's largest literary jury, that of the Mandarache and Hache Awards, made up of almost six thousand young people, has just chosen the winners of the fifteenth edition and has done so with a very high percentage of votes similar to previous years: 94%.Thus, two fully established authors have been crowned: the Argentine writer Samanta Schweblin, with a consolidated international career, has been awarded the Mandarache Prize with her novel Kentukis (Random House Literature); and for his part Eloy Moreno, the well-known author of hits such as The Green Gel Pen or The Gift, has managed to win the Hache Prize with his youth novel Invisible (Nube de Tinta).

The prizes have an economic endowment of 3,000 euros as well as two reproductions of a sculpture by the artist Ángel Haro.

Both authors will be invited to Cartagena in May 2021 to enjoy the award ceremony and collect the statuettes with the winners of the next edition.Despite having to suspend the awards ceremony, one of the most anticipated moments each year by all the participants, Mandarache has managed to successfully overcome the difficulties imposed by the Covid-19 crisis «which is demonstrated for example in the high percentage of vote cast (94%), which are the figures that are usually reached in each edition and which we have reached thanks above all to the efforts of the teaching staff and the promoter group, "said Youth Councilor David Martínez Noguera.

In the same way, the health crisis forced the telematic meeting to be held with the finalist writer Tina Vallès, "for which we received around thirty questions on video from the students, whose directive on the project's YouTube Channel was attended by more of five hundred people, reaching in a few days almost two thousand views ", according to the councilman. The jury that democratically failed with their votes the winners of the fifteenth edition has been made up of a total of 957 reading committees made up of 5,631 young people from three Cartagenas, Spain, Colombia and Chile, thanks to the project's international program, 'Orillas Mandarache' , which has the support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and Acción Cultural Española (AC / E).

Specifically, the Mandarache Prize was made up of 624 committees with 3,633 young people between 15 and 30 years old from almost thirty educational centers (institutes and universities), in addition to 240 students from Cartagena de Indias in Colombia and Cartagena in Chile, who have read and voted with his colleagues from Spain. For its part, the Hache Prize for Youth Literature has been failed by a jury made up of 333 reading committees in which 1,998 adolescents between 12 and 14 years old participated. The Mandarache Reader Training Project, in which both prizes are framed, is a strategy for reading education created by the Cartagena City Council in 2004 and developed from the work of a promoter group that integrates the efforts of educational centers, libraries , bookstores, publishers and associations of parents of students.

The initiative, which has the main support of the General Directorate of Book and Promotion of Reading of the Ministry of Culture, was distinguished with the National Prize for the Promotion of Reading in 2014 and has been highlighted as one of the training projects of most innovative and successful readers of Hispanic letters.
