The mother of the cartageneros is already at home (03/06/2020)

For almost a year, the Virgen de la Caridad has been absent from her basilica, a time when the people of Cartagena have missed her, which is why today many received her with flowers.

The image of the patron saint of Cartagena has returned to her basilica after the rehabilitation process carried out at the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia.

The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, delivered this morning the image of the patron saint of Cartagena to the Saint and Royal Hospital of Charity, in the act that was attended by the bishop. On the carving, which was subjected to a complete study to determine its state of conservation, a general cleaning and chromatic touch-up of different areas has been carried out.

López Miras explained that one of the most complex tasks in the restoration has been the recovery of each of the tears on the face of the Virgin, highlighting "the meticulous work that has been done on the image to make it look beautiful." The president wanted to emphasize that this year has been the first time that Charity was missing in Cartagena on a Friday of Dolores, his big day, since, due to the pandemic and with the decree of the state of alarm, his return was impossible by the scheduled date. Before the Virgin of Charity, the Bishop of Cartagena, Msgr.

José Manuel Lorca Planes, has asked those present to pray for those who have died during this time, with special remembrance of the 149 deaths by Covid-19 in the Region of Murcia.

The bishop has expressed his joy at seeing Charity again in his basilica, thus responding to the desire of the faithful who guard it and who have missed it, especially in this time of pandemic.

"During these months, I have kept in mind the Virgin of Charity, asking for her intercession for those who were suffering," Bishop Lorca stressed."Today is an important and happy day for the people of Cartagena," said its mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, who has thanked the professionals who have intervened in the restoration process and has raised a prayer to the Virgin: "We ask you to You continue to give us strength and that we are able to help those who need it most.

”To end the act, the Salve Cartagenera has been sung, culminating in applause and long live the Mother of God.

For the moment, and because the temple is under construction, the image will remain in the San José chapel.
