The labor market continues to suffer from the covid-19 crisis in the Campo de Cartagena region (03/06/2020)

The total number of unemployed in the Cartagena Region in May 2020 stood at 32,404 people, 27 more unemployed compared to April (+ 0.1%).

May is a month in which unemployment traditionally falls in the Comarca, the economic impact of coronavirus has suppressed this seasonal pattern. The total number of unemployed in the Cartagena Region in May 2020 stood at 32,404 people, which represents an increase of 27 unemployed compared to April, 0.1% more.

This data shows that the negative economic effects associated with the health crisis caused by the coronavirus continued in May.

Unemployment rose in agriculture (+ 9.9%), among the unemployed without previous employment (+ 1.3%) and in services (+ 0.1%), while it fell in construction (-5, 4%) and in industry (-2.0%). By municipalities, the number of unemployed rose in Torre-Pacheco (+ 3.2%), Fuente Álamo (+ 1.4%) and Mazarrón (+ 0.5%).

Conversely, unemployment in May decreased in La Unión (-1.3%), Los Alcázares (-1.0%), San Pedro del Pinatar (-0.5%) and San Javier (-0.4% ), while it remained practically stable in Cartagena (-0.02%).

By sex, unemployment decreased among men, but its incidence increased among women of all age groups. INTERANUAL DATA The slight percentage increase in unemployment registered during the month of May 2020 in the region (+ 0.1%) contrasts with the very significant decrease in unemployment experienced in May 2019 (-4.5%) and also with the average decrease of unemployment in the months of May of the last 10 years (-2.3% for the period 2010-2019).

In other words, although May is a month in which unemployment traditionally falls in the Region, the economic impact of the coronavirus has suppressed this seasonal pattern. For the same reason, the medium-term trend continues the deterioration that began in March 2020.

The number of registered unemployed in the Cartagena Region increased in May by 6,255 people compared to the same month of the previous year, May 2019, which which represents an increase of 23.9%.

Compared to May 2019, unemployment rose in May 2020 in all productive sectors, especially in industry (+ 31.1%), construction (+ 29.7%) and services (+27.8 %). By municipalities, and always in year-on-year terms, the number of unemployed rose in all of the Region, especially in La Unión (+ 29.4%), Los Alcázares (+ 28.1%), Mazarrón (+27.4 %), Fuente Álamo (+ 27.2%) and Cartagena (+ 23.1%).

Compared to May 2019, unemployment in the region as a whole increased both among men and women and in all age groups. COEC prudently values ??this slight increase in unemployment registered during the month of May 2020 in the region (+ 0.1%) caused by the economic effects of the Covid-19 health crisis.

This extraordinarily exceptional circumstance, unrelated to the usual positive behavior of unemployment in the month of May, makes any qualitative analysis or comparison of these figures impossible.

Monthly and year-on-year unemployment data have broken the entire statistical series for the past ten years. However, the president of COEC has expressed concern about this situation in light of the slight reactivation of the labor market in the Region of Murcia, with 40 fewer unemployed, and also facing the increase in unemployment in agriculture, a sector that was maintaining employment during this crisis. "We are very concerned about the stagnation of the labor market in our region and, especially when these statistics do not include the data of people affected by ERTES.

We have not started the economic recovery from this crisis," said Ana Correa. From COEC we continue to demand a postponement in taxes and social contributions, as well as greater liquidity and State coverage of the financing needs of companies to, among other effects, ensure that all people affected by an ERTE can join their companies . "The Campo de Cartagena region is suffering, with particular harshness, the slowdown experienced by tourism and the closure of shops.

For this reason, from COEC we request the various administrations to launch a Trade Reactivation Plan and Tourism to help get out of this huge crisis to these sectors so badly affected by Covid-19, "said the president of COEC. In relation to the recovery of the Mar Menor, we again require the competent Administrations (state, autonomous and local) a coordinated, serious and rigorous work, with the establishment of a schedule of actions, competent administration and execution period, duly publicized. DE-STATIONALIZED DATA In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of unemployed registered in the region increased by 636 people in May 2020 compared to April 2020, which represents an increase of 2.0%.

This data shows the persistent negative effect that the health crisis is having on the economy of the Region.

With the data currently available, and taking as a whole March, April and May 2020, during those three months seasonally adjusted unemployment in the region increased by 6,152 people. By municipalities, seasonally adjusted unemployment rose in May in all of the Comarca, especially in Torre-Pacheco (+ 4.6%), Mazarrón (+ 3.4%), San Pedro del Pinatar (+ 3.1%) , San Javier (+ 3.0%) and Cartagena (+ 1.4%).

Seasonally adjusted unemployment in the Region of Murcia as a whole increased by 3.1% in May, an increase that is more than one percentage point higher than that of the Region. SIGNED CONTRACTS The total number of contracts signed in the Cartagena Region in May 2020 was 22,390 contracts, which means 4,682 more contracts signed than in April, 26.4% more.

The number of contracts signed increased in all productive sectors, especially in the services sector (+ 39.0%). By municipalities, the number of contracts signed in May increased in almost all those of the Region, with the exception of Fuente Álamo (-41.1%).

The greatest percentage increases in hiring were found in La Unión (+ 117.2%), Los Alcázares (+ 49.9%), Cartagena (+ 47.3%) and Mazarrón (+ 31.5%). To put in context the variation in the number of contracts signed in the month of May in the region of Cartagena, the increase observed in May 2020 (+ 26.4%) was less than that experienced in May 2019 (+38, 7%), although it remained above the average variation in hiring in May of the last ten years, which stands at + 19.4%.

In other words, the monthly increase in the number of contracts signed in the Shire in May 2020 was not very different from the usual increase in the months of May in our recent past. Compared to the same month of the previous year, May 2019, the number of contracts signed in the Cartagena Region in May 2020 decreased by 17,909 contracts, 44.4% less.

In interannual terms, the number of contracts signed in the Shire in May decreased in all productive sectors, especially in services (-71.0%) and in industry (-51.3%).

Year-on-year hiring fell 37.8% in the Region of Murcia as a whole, 6.6 pp less than in the Region of Cartagena. By municipalities, and always in year-on-year terms, the number of contracts signed in May 2020 decreased in all of the Comarca, especially in San Pedro del Pinatar (-71.1%), La Unión (-63.6%) , San Javier (-53.8%), Los Alcázares (-44.7%) and Cartagena (-44.6%).
