The startup created by a graduate grows to become the UPCT-Wefish Chair (19/05/2020)

| The UPCT will promote best practices in sustainable development for a mobile application designed for sport fishing | Alberto Manuel López (El Palmar, 1985) graduated in Engineering of Mineral Resources and Energy from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) in 2014.He was number 1 in his class and Extraordinary Prize for his Final Degree Project, among those presented that year.Sports fishing enthusiast, created in 2017 the startup WeFish, a free app, conceived as a social network and aimed at fishing fans, which offered its users numerous resources to share their experience, plan their outings, buy or sell material and know the most suitable techniques and gear for each occasion.

Today, this business idea has become an application used by 60,000 users, which employs more than fifteen employees and aspires to continue growing and attracting talent thanks to the agreement signed with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.Thus, the UPCT expands its Chairs Network with the incorporation of the UPCT-WeFish Chair, created to collaborate in training activities, practical application of knowledge and promotion of innovation.

The new Chair will promote comprehensive and sustainable solutions for sport fishing and will favor the transfer of knowledge in the field of management and development of mobile applications and Artificial Intelligence solutions.

In addition, it will develop studies that seek the best exploitation of predictive algorithms, image recognition algorithms and Big Data strategies.It will also launch programs aimed at promoting sustainable development, reducing the amount of plastic waste in the environment and involving its users in the conservation of the rivers and coasts of Spain.

Installed in the CEEIM WeFish has been installed since its creation in the technology incubator of the European Center for Business and Innovation in Murcia (CEEIM), which has a team of expert advisers in business entrepreneurship and support in the search for public and private financing, in addition to training activities for entrepreneurs.

The young company is owned by the Wannaseed startup financing vehicle, powered by CEEIM, and linked to Murcia-Ban, the first network of private investors in the Region of Murcia, created by the Instituto de Fomento and based at CEEIM.

Acknowledgments The WeFish app, created by the UPCT graduate entrepreneur Alberto Manuel López, has garnered numerous awards since its launch.Among them, the one granted by RTVE Emprende, the program for promoting entrepreneurship of Spanish Television, in the Communication and Social Networks category, and the Venture on the Road contest, awarded last February by the SeedRocket accelerator, which is a benchmark in its sector, in addition to being owned by the Miami investment fund TheVentureCity, developing one of the most advanced acceleration programs in the world.Two months ago, it reached its funding objective with the Startupxplore investment platform, in total € 196,000, an amount that adds to the € 100,000 contributed by TheVentureCity fund.

  The Ipak Software Development team, creators of the WeFish application, also includes another graduate of the Polytechnic, Manuel Manzanera Aroca, a graduate in Telematics and a Telecommunications engineer.

The Network of Chairs of the UPCT, made up of almost fifty technological chairs, Entrepreneurship and socioeconomic located in the Research Laboratories Building (ELDI), helps to strengthen the relationship between the University and the productive fabric thanks to the implementation of training, research and development activities or knowledge transfer in areas of interest common.
