Vía Libre Cartagena: "We do not believe it, Madam Mayor" (13/05/2020)

We have seen another virtual advertisement on the website of the Town Hall, "Cartagena will have an Urban Mobility Plan that promotes spaces for pedestrians and bicycles." and then, once again, they stir up our indignation. How long have we been asking the government teams of this city council for education, awareness and empowerment of truly sustainable modes of mobility such as walking and cycling? You and some other councilor on your team know this; 20 years.

Specifically to you and that councilman 5 years, since 2015.During all this time we have been suing them, among other things:1) The drafting of the framework plan such as the PMUS (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan), as many cities in Spain already have.

Have they done it? NOT2) That an Ordinance be drafted that regulates the mobility of pedestrians and cyclists (such as Vitoria, San Sebastián, Zaragoza, Seville, Burgos, Valencia, etc.).

Has it been drafted? NOT3) That the "Pedestrian and Bicycle Office" be created, which would be the first, in our country, to work together on both modes, if other cities do not advance, as has happened with other demands.

Recall that the creation of the Office was approved, unanimously, in the plenary session of the Cartagena City Council on September 8, 2016 (it will take 4 years).

Has it been created? NOT.

Murcia has had a Bicycle Office for more than 10 years.

A lot of educational programs that we have demanded of them and that they have not done would be launched in that Office.

And most serious, we have offered to carry it forward seeing, during all this time that you have not done it and have not seen it necessary.4) The launch of the Bicity and so many things. We are tired of hearing them say what they are going to do and over time we see that they are not doing it.

We have objective examples so that whoever reads this document has knowledge of why we say it:In 2017 we had a meeting in which he told us that he was in contact with a municipal Bicycle Loan company and that he was going to put the service into operation.

We see that this was not the case.

We volunteered to help with the task but never knew.About a couple of years ago we had another meeting in which we told him, among other things, that it was urgent to remove the containers from in front of the zebra crossings, which is a great risk for pedestrians and especially for children and girls.

He told us, in a boast of making us believe that he would solve the problem, that the councilor responsible for the matter was in it and that it would not take long to solve it.

Two years have passed, is it resolved? NOTWe do not see, in practice, the bicycle lane that was to be carried out on Calle Trafalgar, according to a project carried out more than two years ago by a company in Madrid.

Does not exist. They have a project, for at least a year that they were about to do, to expand the space for pedestrians and bike lanes on Calle Esparta.

It is undone. After having sued him for a long time and also by an educational center to start the School Roads and not get it, during the 2018-19 academic year one of our organizations together with the Virgen de Begoña and Narval educational centers promoted two school Roads in mode Pedibus (walking), the City Council joined the event, which we applauded, although later it wanted to give the impression that it had been the municipal government that had started it, an unethical practice.

Once this was achieved, in the summer of 2019 we passed, to all the municipal groups to present it jointly and that in this way it was approved, the Motion "For the conversion of school environments into areas of protection of Children's Health "(proposal from the National Mobility and Childhood Forum). The parties that make up the government did not present it and also you and your entire government voted against, along with VOX.

It is another sign that they are not, at least sufficiently, for the protection of the health of the population in general and of children in particular. The accumulated experience of their practices does not allow us to hope that they will do what they advertise. On April 28 we sent you and the Deputy Mayor a document with three measures for walking and cycling during and after COVID19, carry them out, then we will begin to believe that you are for sustainable mobility and for a city for people.

The facts are what make people believe, not the words.

We are at your disposal to work for a Cartagena for people.By Via Libre CT By FAVCAC By MoviliCT for your Health
