UPCT students ask the counselor to lower the tuition price (11/05/2020)

The Student Council of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) today called on the counselor for Employment, Research and Universities, Miguel Motas, to lower the cost of university tuition. The request is made as a result of the difficult economic situation they are going through a significant number of students following the coronavirus crisis.

The students intend to avoid that their classmates are forced to abandon their studies for not being able to cope with the payment, both the pending enrollment of this year, as well as that of the next courses.

The President of the Council, Rosario López Plana, affirms: «We consider that the consequences that are going to derive from the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, both social and economic, force us to adopt exceptional measures to protect students, a vulnerable group in this situation ».The student representative recalls that if "we are based on the experience of the 2008 economic crisis, the situation we are in can be extended to the next courses, both in 2020/2021 and in subsequent years".

López Plana, a student in the last year of the degree in Industrial Technology Engineering, points out that this is "a good opportunity to reverse the situation and return to previous public prices." In the field of university fees, "we propose that next courses be valued so that the price of second enrollment is equated to the price of the first, the third to the second enrollment, this being the maximum price of credit," highlights Rosario López. In the event that the CARM cannot apply the reduction in the price of registration, the student representatives propose that the applications for cancellation of registration that are presented be resolved ex officio, «and thus no suspension is penalized in those subjects whose teaching has been altered by the pandemic, "he adds.

The UPCT Student Council shows its support for the counselor in this situation in which, according to them, "we should all row in the same direction."The "hand" of the UPCT students "will always be stretched out to work and collaborate on all those issues they deem appropriate." The Student Council has sent the request, in writing, to the counselor Motas.

The text asks the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia to lower the public prices that regulate university enrollment.
