Two UPCT graduates, nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Foundation international award for young talents (29/04/2020)

3D printed humanitarian aid shelters for emergencies and the construction of a network of communities, as new models of habitat, are the final projects of the career of the already architects for the UPCT, Víctor Martínez Pacheco and Francis Almonte. Both have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Foundation International Prize for Young Talent Architecture.

I am very happy with the nomination, it is a step towards the approval of this type of humanitarian aid model, said the architect Víctor Martínez Pacheco.Specifically, his project consisted of an investigation of architecture in disasters, characterization of the structural behavior of 3D printed pieces, development of a construction system and application in the design of a refugee camp and a school in the Central African Republic.

Currently, Martínez Pacheco has set up an Architecture studio in Murcia dedicated to sustainable architecture. In addition, during the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, it has participated together with the regional group CV19-FAB-MURCIA in the AIRE project (Innovative Help to Create Respirators), printing protective material with its 3D printer. For his part, Francis Almonte, who works in the Architecture studio of UPCT professor Juan Pedro Sanz, is also very happy to have been nominated for these awards.

Many projects have been presented and it is a joy to know that they have selected mine, hopefully it will reach the final phase, he trusts.

In his project, Almonte studies new models of life, understanding architecture as a catalyst of well-being for society. It is characterized by promoting a complex network of communities, which reinforces and manages relationships and intergenerational coexistence, in which young and old coexist in independent homes, but sharing common services. The transformation of the ways of living represents a new challenge for the architectural project. This proposal addresses, from a spatial, constructive and urban point of view, all the contemporary fields and contexts of this social reflection.
