The City Council offers psychological support in the face of problems arising from confinement and the pandemic (28/04/2020)

| The service will be accessible to the entire population through the single social telephone number 969 021 123 | The Social Services of the City of Cartagena have launched a psychological support system to help citizens cope with the emotional and mental problems derived from the pandemic and the situation of confinement due to the coronavirus. The service, which is already operational among users of social programs, will be accessible to the entire population through the single social phone number 968 021 123, as announced by the Deputy Mayor and head of the social area, Noelia Arroyo."Municipal psychologists have developed a procedure that is already being used by City Council social workers to detect symptoms of psychological problems among users of municipal social services.

Now that service is offered to all citizens to give early psychological support and, if necessary, refer the person served to other programs or services, "said Arroyo.Specialists warn of a possible increase in mental health problems and emotional manifestations due to distress situations and difficulties in managing emotions due to the existence of the disease and the period of confinement.

The extent of the problem will depend on the duration of the emergency, but its incidence on the most vulnerable people has already been verified."Any person from Cartagena, through the unique social telephone number 968 021 123, can ask for this help, which consists of active listening by our psychologists, who will teach them formulas and strategies so that they themselves can respond to personal and family situations" , Arroyo has explained.Among the psychological consequences of the presence of a pandemic and confinement are difficulties in falling asleep or concentrating, the sensation of tension that can become a feeling of danger or threat; irritability, isolation or increased consumption of alcohol or tobacco.

The support team will assess each case and, if necessary, refer it to resources of the Health system.Psychologists from the Department of Social Services have developed an internal protocol so that social workers can detect symptoms of psychological problems related to the crisis, study their situation and transfer formulas and strategies to them so that they themselves can respond to personal and family situations.

Those people are referred to the psychological team, which performs a support task that is now open to any citizen who needs it.
