| Arroyo urges the pumping in El Albujón and the withdrawal of dry and mud requested by the mayors of the Mar Menor | Operators of the General Directorate of the Mar Menor have begun the elimination of the reed beds that grew in the vicinity of the Los Nietos Nautical Club and whose elimination was required for years by the neighbors due to the generation of dirt, stagnation and bad odors.

The vice mayor and head of the municipal commission of the Mar Menor, Noelia Arroyo, has visited the works together with the general director of the Mar Menor, Miriam Pérez, who explained that the work will last until mid-May and will include the elimination of waste and biomass accumulated in an approximate surface of 3,200 square meters. The vice-mayor has thanked the implementation of these works but has indicated that the Mar Menor requires other urgent measures that have already been indicated by the riverside mayors.

Arroyo considers urgent the start-up of the El Albujón pumping station in the conditions in which it has been claimed by the front of mayors.

“All our mayors have come together to demand actions that we consider basic in the Mar Menor and the most urgent of all is to stop the entry of fresh water with nitrates.

Nitrate levels go up and salinity goes down, and the result can be catastrophic as temperatures rise.

The pumping station must be started now.

The plenary session of Cartagena already considered it urgent in February and now it can not be postponed.

More measures need to be put in place to lower the aquifer,we need action now.

Plans are not made to store them in drawers, but to set dates and budget.

”Arroyo, who has been accompanied by the Councilor for Infrastructure, María Casajús, and the president of the Los Nietos neighborhood association, Nani Vergara, has.

recalled that the mayors also demand the urgent removal of dry and sludge, which modify the hydrodynamics of the Mar Menor, generate bad smells and become a problem for the bathroom. The Deputy Mayor has visited the mouth of the Rambla de El Albujón and the outflow of water from the El Carmolí wetland from which a permanent flow of fresh water from the rain and the water table has flowed for months to the Mar Menor.
