Families, home care and assistance in vulnerable neighborhoods, destination of the 707,000 euros from the Social Fund (11/04/2020)

The Cartagena City Council will allocate to the home care of dependent people and to guarantee basic services to the most vulnerable families and neighborhoods, most of the 707,000 euros from the Extraordinary Social Fund against the Covid-19 crisis that has been assigned by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, as explained by the Deputy Mayor and head of the Social Area, Noelia Arroyo.

The intention of the City Council is to reinforce with these funds the telecare services, food and home care for the elderly, disabled or in a situation of dependency to face the new needs caused by the situation of confinement.

It also proposes to allocate the fund to the reinforcement of the attention in basic needs to the families in situation of greater vulnerability to give service to those who join as applicants for help due to the economic consequences of the health crisis.

The municipal government also intends that this line of aid, approved by Royal Decree on March 17, be used to serve neighborhoods of the municipality with their own social problems, promoting special actions in coordination with the Third Sector entities with which they already work in those places.

The Deputy Mayor added that she also hopes to be able to strengthen the Social Services team from this 707,000 euro item, while the central government releases the 2019 surplus. “This extraordinary item is not even a quarter of the 3.3 million million euros from Cartagena that are still retained by the Government.

It is money that we want to use to help families and companies in Cartagena and we need it now. ”

Arroyo recalls that the mayor asked for the mediation of the Federation of Municipalities to release the surpluses and that the FEMP itself has told the Government that this money belongs to the municipalities and that the municipalities have to decide how to apply them to fight the coronavirus, revive economic activity and boost social welfare
