Cartagena firefighters remove five swarms of bees from facades and public places so far in April (08/04/2020)

The Fire Extinguishing Service and Salvage of Cartagena has proceeded, since April 1, to withdraw five swarms of bees, as reported by the Cartagena Fire Chief, Francisco Gómez-Ávalos, who has indicated that In recent days they have removed these honeycombs that had nested on facades and affected public places.

It is a habitual action on these dates that does not pose great danger or threat to the public, but must be carried out to avoid accidents and move insects to quieter places where they can carry out their activity.

Thus, in recent days the Cartagena Fire Department has withdrawn swarms in the extension of Juan Fernández Street, on April 1;

in Lo Poyo in Los Nietos, on the 5th;

on Avenida del Progreso also in Los Nietos, on the 6th;

and one in Castillejos street in San Antón and another in Llano del Beal, on April 7.

Since bees are a protected species, they move to the Security Park, from where beekeepers are notified to take charge of them.

Thus, in recent weeks several services of this type have been carried out and will continue to be carried out at least until the end of May, due to the increase in temperatures and flowering.

What sometimes happens is that the hives with many offspring “unfold” and a group of bees (swarm) decides to leave the hive with a queen to find a new location.

As they pass through the city, they land in different places, most of the time only momentarily, and that's when they alert the population and generate this little social alarm wherever they are.

On other occasions, what happens is that a hive, established in a place close to the population, and which has remained "asleep" during the winter due to the low temperatures, begins its activity when spring arrives, making itself visible by the constant traffic of these little insects in and out of the hive for pollen.

From Cartagena Firefighters report that these insects are not aggressive as long as they are not disturbed or attacked.

However, caution should be exercised and the area in which they are waiting should be marked so that they decide to move to a quieter place for them.

Otherwise, the Fire Department can be notified by calling the emergency number 112 or directly at the phone 968 12 88 80, which they will send to a specialist team or will contact a beekeeper to remove them.
