UPCT develops 3D adapters for snorkel type diving masks (31/03/2020)

The Industrial Design and Scientific Calculation Service will manufacture a prototype that allows the patient to breathe oxygen.

Will develop another adapter to filter the air breathed by healthcare personnel |

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) and the City Council of the port city have launched a system for collecting snorkel diving masks.

The objective is to achieve an experimental prototype that helps improve the respiration of patients with coronavirus and protects healthcare personnel working on the front line.

The UPCT Industrial Design and Scientific Calculation Service will develop two prototypes manufactured in 3D.

One of them allows patients to breathe oxygen.

The other will be used as PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for healthcare personnel.

In addition to protecting the face, it will be equipped with a filter that allows them to inhale clean air and avoid contagions, explains the manager of the University, Isidro Ibarra.

The masks adapted at the UPCT will be tested in the Region's hospitals.

Where to take them

The diving masks to be collected are those made by the Decathlon company.

Citizens who wish to donate a device should take them to their pharmacies, in a closed plastic bag, to facilitate safe handling.

Subsequently, they will be stored in UPCT facilities.

In different cities, citizen initiatives promoted mainly by engineers and doctors from various hospitals have been promoted in order to adapt these sports masks through 3D printing and use them to improve the breathing of patients and for the protection of toilets.
