The film, The Year of Discovery, shot in Cartagena by Luis López Carrasco, wins the most important documentary festival in France (27/03/2020)

The 42nd edition of the Cinéma du Réel festival has awarded the Cinéma du Réel Grand Prix, the most prominent of the festival's awards, to the Spanish film, The Year of Discovery, shot in Cartagena by the Murcian filmmaker Luis López Carrasco.

The jury describes the film as "a great epic of the word in Spain after Franco and after the industrial crisis, where the same bar is filmed morning and afternoon, like a Noah's Ark or a Tower of Babel, it is a film by stained glass that makes temporalities waver. A dissonant choir but always magnificently cadenced, a patient, generous, formally admirable work. "

The 200-minute film was also honored by the library jury.

The film is a choral portrait made up of forty-five characters, from the peripheral neighborhoods of Cartagena and La Unión.

'The Year of Discovery' is the second feature film by Luis López Carrasco (El Futuro, 2013), and premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Since then, it has received rave reviews and reviews in the main specialized media.

In Spain, the film will be released in the Official Section of the Seville European Film Festival, which will be held from November 6 to 14.

López Carrasco returns to the festival after his successful participation with his first solo feature "The Future" in the Las Nuevas Olas Section.

A production by La Cima Producciones with Alina Film and the help of ICAA and the Cartagena City Council, and is distributed in Spain by Begin Again Films.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Cinema du Réel - which has been held this year between March 13 and 22 - is a prestigious film festival that combines documentary, rehearsal and experimentation in its selection of films, reflecting the diversity of genres and cinematographic approaches in the world.

This makes it one of the few documentary festivals that emphasize the genre's heritage and memory, while bringing contemporary creation into dialogue.

Cinéma du Réel acts as a discoverer of new talents, although he is also attentive to the most experienced filmmakers.

The festival has helped reveal many directors known to the general public today on the international scene.

SYNOPSIS

Neighbors, young people and the unemployed chat inside a bar between cigarettes, breakfasts and snacks.

They remember unusual dreams, share work concerns and project future plans.

The bar is located in the city of Cartagena, in the southeast of the country.

As the day progresses, the disturbances of the 1992 industrial crisis are heard closer and closer. In 1992 two fundamental events were held in Spain: the Olympic Games in Barcelona and the Universal Exposition in Seville, linked to the celebration of the V Centenary of the Discovery of America.

Ten years after Felipe González's rise to power, Spain appears to the international community as an effervescent, modern and civilized country.

A future world economic power.

The whole of Spanish society remembers that year as the culmination of the happy eighties, Spain has ceased to be the eternal backward, miserable and poor country.

However, in a provincial city in the southeast of the country, the promises for the closure of factories and industrial dismantling acquire increasing violence until ending the fire of the regional parliament with Molotov cocktails.

DIRECTOR

Luis López Carrasco (Murcia, 1981) is a filmmaker, teacher and writer.

Co-founder of the audiovisual collective Los Hijos, dedicated to experimental documentary cinema.

His work as a director has been screened at numerous international festivals such as Locarno, Rotterdam, New York, Toronto, BAFICI or Viennale and international contemporary art centers such as Georges Pompidou or ICA London;

and in Spain at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, CCCB, MUSAC, Marco, Tabakalera de Donostia, La Casa Encendida, IVAM, Cendeac or Guggenheim Bilbao.

He is currently a teacher at the SUR, ECAM and ESCAC schools and regularly collaborates in the culture pages of CTXT.
