First telematic defense of a doctoral thesis (23/03/2020)

Subtitle: # Day8 The first doctoral thesis affected by the closure of buildings decreed by the coronavirus health alert adapts to confinement and successfully defends itself through the Teams platform First doctoral thesis defended telematically at the International Doctoral School from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.

The coronavirus health alert has led to the UPCT having enabled a videoconference system so that Óscar de Francisco Ortiz has been able to successfully defend his doctoral thesis today.

PhD students, thesis supervisors, the court and the interested public have been able to participate in the public act of defense of the thesis from various points of the Spanish geography, bound by confinement.

All of them have accessed from their homes electronically.

This modality "represents a challenge because it has all the problems that live broadcasting usually presents, the requirement for the perfect functioning of the internet in six homes and, among others, the public (not anonymous) nature of the exhibition," adds the professor. Manuel Estrems co-director of the thesis together with the professor Horacio Sánchez Reinoso, both from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Manufacturing.

The doctoral thesis of Óscar de Francisco represents a further step in the advancement of science. The work condenses a series of works related to precision engineering, with which precision of tenths of microns is reached, and experimental tests have also been carried out on a Low-cost platform on which micromachining or microtexturing operations can be performed.

The thesis, entitled 'Analysis and Implementation of a Machine Vision Method for Micro-positioning', includes the measurements obtained in the Metrology Laboratory of the area of knowledge of Manufacturing Process Engineering at the UPCT, as well as the results obtained through the development of different algorithms within the scope of machine vision to improve the positioning accuracy of the demonstrator axes.

The results have been presented at conferences of the European Society of Precision Engineering (EUSPEN) and published in high-impact international journals.

Óscar de Francisco has completed his thesis in the Industrial Technologies Doctorate program and teaches at the Defense University Center (CUD), attached to the UPCT.

Extra effort

The director of the UPCT International Doctoral School, Pablo Fernández Escámez, recognizes that the need to adapt to the new conditions has meant an extra effort to start up and configure resources to the formal demands of the event, especially by of the Computer Science and Academic Planning Units of our University.

It is not the first time that any of the participants access it electronically, “but it does take place completely in person, which has been a challenge in order to go from a one hundred percent face-to-face event to a telematic in such a short time. "
