Massive monitoring of classes and online tutoring at the UPCT (17/03/2020)

Massive monitoring of online classes and tutorials - Differential Equations of Mathematics 1 through YouTube, Chemical Reaction Engineering and numerous contents of all kinds through the network.

So it has been on day 2 of #QuedateEnCasa for the students of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

A day in which teachers and Administration and Services Personnel have done everything possible so that Engineering, Architecture and Business students can continue their learning, despite the state of Alarm decreed by the Government of Spain.

There are no figures yet but the monitoring has been massive, according to the vice-rector for Information and Communication Technologies, Mathieu Kessler.

Added to this are the virtual tutorials that the UPCT professors have carried out. There have been more than 60 videos broadcast by professors so that students do not miss their classes.

And it is that the teaching staff and the PAS are aware of the importance of these actions.

«It is assuming a significant effort by all the staff of the Computing Service, the Digital Content Production Center (CPCD) and, of course, the teaching staff.

And, of course, of the students who have connected in a massive way », highlights Mathieu Kessler.

These people have even worked over the weekend to respond to this challenge.

And it is that "going from almost one day to the next from a face-to-face teaching model to another model in which all interaction is carried out telematically also represents a technological and training challenge," says Kessler.

According to the vice-rector for Faculty, Luis Javier Lozano, more than 350 teachers «have already told us how they are going to implement the support measures for students: Online tutoring, streaming from home, improvement of materials in the Virtual Classroom and guides on monitoring of subjects by days and other actions ».

In recent years, a large part of the teaching staff has received training to teach online.

These training actions are added to those that the CPCD is carrying out these days to improve the training of teachers in these subjects.

However, on March 6, the Vice-Rector for Teaching Staff requested that all teachers, in order to ensure teaching quality, have perfectly updated all the material that students might need through the Virtual Classroom depending on the timing scheduled.

And since those days, also the professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Juan Medina, offers support to teachers and students from the Community of Madrid and Álava who were unable to attend face-to-face classes due to the closure of schools and universities to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.

Medina created more than 15 years ago the pioneering educational video project in the world lasmatematicas.es and has more than 200,000 followers.
