The City Council recommends avoiding agglomerations and increasing hygienic measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus (10/03/2020)

The City of Cartagena has recommended that the population refrain from participating in events that involve crowds or that are held in small places and that extreme hygiene measures such as continuous handwashing to contain the risk of infection of the coronavirus.

These recommendations follow the guidelines established by the health authorities of the Regional and National Government, as well as the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, which advise suspending the events of more than a thousand people and reduce the capacity to one third in those of less of that amount, to avoid proximity and physical contact as much as possible;

while increasing hygiene and cleaning measures.

This afternoon, the local government has held a meeting with the different officials of the municipal services to exchange information and coordinate the measures that will be implemented successively as the health risk of the coronavirus evolves.

In the meeting the decision of the General Directorate of Sports has been transferred, regarding the suspension during the next 15 days of the competitions of the school sports leagues.

Also the recommendations of the Ministry of Education to maintain for the moment school and extracurricular activities in schools, increasing prevention and hygiene measures, through a reinforcement of the cleaning and continuous washing of hands.

Since the City Council lacks competence in health emergency situations, during the meeting it has been established to follow the recommendations of the health authorities, in acts promoted by the City Council itself.

In this sense it has been agreed to suspend the food that was going to take place on Thursday, March 12, organized by the Department of Equality, and in which about 400 women between the ages of 50 and 60 would participate;

as well as another meal for adults in La Palma, next Sunday, in which about 200 people had confirmed their attendance.

The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, who has chaired the meeting, together with the vice mayor, Noelia Arroyo, and the head of the Public Health Service of the Autonomous Community in Cartagena, José Jesús Guillén, explained that “we are in a scenario of containment and that the measures and suspensions, of a preventive nature, will be decided as the spread of the virus evolves, in continuous contact with the health authorities.

Also in the field of municipal public employees, a series of recommendations and measures have been put in place, especially in the areas of public attention, establishing safety distances and distributing hand sanitizer dispensers in the different municipal units.

Some decisions that were taken yesterday Monday within the Health and Safety Committee of the City Council.
