MC: PP and C's deny institutional support to the port of Cartagena while their parties are promoting Almeria (06/03/2020)

During the Plenary session of last February, the alliance of transfugas, PP and C's prevented the approval of the motion of MC Cartagena that sought to demand from the regional Executive a real boost to the construction of the Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL) of Cartagena.

It should be remembered that the articles of the initiative required the transfer in 2020 of the Franco Deposit to Los Camachos, in compliance with the agreement reached during the meeting of the Consortium of this infrastructure in November 2016, as well as urging the Institute of Development to demand the companies to which it subsidizes and with which it works that all its merchandise leave from the port of the Region, the one of Cartagena.

Seeking the support of the parties that have struggled to torpedo the only regional ZAL may be a utopian goal but, once again, our formation invited them to position themselves on the side of citizens and the common interest.

They, as expected, chose their acronyms.

The lack of protection with which they submit to Cartagena and the rest of the Region, denying institutional support for an infrastructure of this draft contrasts with what happened in the neighboring Andalusian community, governed by PP and C's.

PP and C's do not support the port of Cartagena while their Andalusian colleagues promote the Almeria

There, during the past year, the Junta de Andalucía declared business investment of strategic interest for Andalusia the project for "industrial implementation and expansion of Cosentino" in three municipalities in Almeria (Cantoria, Partaloa and Fines).

With this measure, the consolidation of the industrial facilities of the Andalusian multinational Cosentino was facilitated, in addition to undertaking the expansion of existing ones and investing in new auxiliary facilities.

All this to facilitate the landing at the port of Almeria de Maersk, the largest shipping company in the world.

In this context, and known the decrease of container traffic in our port, the spokesman of MC Cartagena, José López, has started remembering the vote against PP, C's and transfugas during the last Plenary session to boost the Los Camachos ZAL.

"They said they think it is blackmail that the regional government subsidizes companies that work with the port of Cartagena," he added.

"That is the level. It seems good that the money from the port is derived to Murcia but not that the port is helped with public money. Do you know what the result is? We continue to lose containers because others do," López reasoned in relation to the support of the Junta de Andalucía to the port of Almería.

Container traffic decrease

He then pointed out that, in the last year, "thanks to the coordinated work of the Junta de Andalucía and the Port Authority of Almeria, that port has assumed part of Cartagena's container traffic, specifically, that of the marble sector ".

Subsequently, he has deepened in the data that reveal that "thanks to the policies of 'La Trinca' we lose 20% of containers, while in Almería they loyalty to the companies of their province, and they do so with strategic investments, such as thirty-three millions that announced last year to improve services. "

For this reason, the spokesman of the cartageneristas has indicated that "in Cartagena it is urgent that the company plan announced last fall is fulfilled and work begins for the new container terminal in Escombreras, essential for the future of our port."

José López has continued his argument adding that "there is no logical reason for the Port of Cartagena to continue losing ground despite having funds to improve its services and attract new lines, except for the asphyxiation strategy to our region that leads San Esteban from decades ago that Arroyo, Castejón and company serve. "

Actions to stop the fall

Finally, the spokesman of MC Cartagena has announced that this situation will induce them to "start a round of meetings with the business community of the Region tending to coordinate efforts and initiatives that prevent the recession and depression that impose on us."
