Social Services starts up 'Accessible Nature' and acquires a new joëlette chair (03/03/2020)

The City Council of Cartagena through the Department of Social Services has acquired a new joëlette chair and has launched a new project, under the title "Accessible Nature", together with the Association Stride on Wheels, which is part of the II Plan Municipal Disability Council.

This project makes it possible for people with disabilities to enjoy, learn, learn, value and protect our natural heritage, while promoting nature as a more accessible and inclusive space.

In the presentation ceremony held on Tuesday, March 3, the vice mayor and councilor of the Area of ​​Social Welfare and Sports, Noelia Arroyo, stressed that the goal is to continue working for an "inclusive Cartagena" and that through this cycle, "allow to access the most exquisite corners of Cartagena to people who cannot do otherwise. "

The mayor explained that the project opens this year with seven routes through nature, one a month until December, avoiding the hottest months.

The first will be on March 17, on a route with members of the Multiple Sclerosis Association of Cartagena, who will be accompanied by the Rambla del Cañar.

Zancadas volunteers are going to give a huge gift to many people who are going to be able to visit places like the Rambla del Cañar, the Ashes battery or Calblanque, which are corners of Cartagena totally inaccessible for many people with mobility problems.

The routes are programmed for groups of up to 20 people, so that all participants have specialized attention, they will travel in an adapted bus and at the destination they will have the support of stride volunteers and all their adapted material.

The expected expected number of people with disabilities and reduced mobility who will benefit from activities in nature, this year 2020 will be 150 people.

For his part, the Vice President of the Stride Association, Juan Ernesto Peña, highlighted the extraordinary reception by the City Council towards the Association.

"The commitment to the inclusive city of the City Council is a reality, which is reflected in concrete facts. This chair is the fourth one that has Strides On Wheels, the second one provided by the City Council, and the first two-wheeler that allows greater functionality" .

The vice president also emphasizes that inclusive leisure has to be safe, and that this chair has "a plus in safety" for its stability and manageability.

In addition, he was advancing one of the new achievements of this year, which for the first time the organizers of the route of the fortresses, the Marine Corps School, have authorized them to complete the entire route.

Therefore, they have set up an operation of more than 30 people to perform it safely.

The vice president has given the details of the operation, "we will use the four chairs in the children's race and in the big race two chairs and a bar. We will also have a reinforcement team for the most complicated areas."

To facilitate accessibility to natural environments, the association Zancadas on Wheels offers three Joëlette monorueda chairs, a Joëlette Twin chair with two wheels and a chair called Fire Truck.

The Cartagena City Council has subsidized two Joëlette chairs in total: the first was one of the monorueda, folding off-road chairs, worth approximately 5,000 euros.

The event was also attended by the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García, along with the team of the Department and the president of the Multiple Sclerosis Association, Mari Ángeles Ros.
