The City Council prepares the first digital inventory of gardens in Cartagena (26/02/2020)

As indicated by the Councilor for Gardens, Juan Pedro Torralba, it is a system that offers the opportunity to work with multiple territorial data: topographic maps, urban planning, constructions, cadastral data, plans, etc.

agglutinating all these elements in the same database for later management and analysis.

"In this way a powerful tool is generated very useful when carrying out the registration, knowledge and decision making on the territory from the same portal and that will allow us to adapt the conditions of the new contract to the real needs of the municipality" , said the councilman.

This system generates a digital model of reality that, until recently, was unattainable because of its extension and complexity.

In a cartography (CAD type) you can represent all kinds of elements (buildings, furniture, vegetation or others), while a GIS allows you to add more information to each of these elements, such as number of floors, year of construction, plant species , conservation status, treatments, operations, etc.

All GIS files are georeferenced, that is, they are placed on a specific point on the map.

This allows, for example, to compare maps of urban vegetation with cadastral maps and to know in the first instance whether it is a municipal ownership or not or to establish all kinds of territorial studies.

Thus, it is possible to have a virtual model of reality in constant updating and development.

The capabilities of this tool are being launched in Cartagena for the management of public Green Areas and tree-lined streets throughout the municipality.

For this, during the last year, a record has been made of all the elements that can compose this system of parks and gardens.

This first phase, very close to its completion, consists of introducing each garden, flowerbed, tree, palm tree and urban furniture present in municipal public green areas.

To achieve this objective, satellite images, previous cartographies, data and technical visits have been used to obtain, with the greatest thoroughness and detail possible, a digital model as close to reality as possible.

“The work now goes through a detailed review of the Parks and Gardens service to ensure 100% of the data;

but it is already a tool that can be used in daily maintenance work, as well as to plan in a more orderly way the medium and long-term needs of the parks and gardens as a whole, ”explained Torralba.

That is, the GIS is not a still image, but requires a constant update that reflects, for example, data from the tree and species, measurements, which trees are sick, which have just been trimmed, how many claims and interventions there is a tree, what treatments have been done and when, ... or if there is a bank in poor condition.

Although the information still needs to be checked, data can already be extracted on the basic elements that make up the parks and gardens of the municipality (from Isla Plana to Cabo de Palos and from the coast to the Rambla del Albujn).

Of course, this information is essential for the current situation of environmental deterioration, since the necessary role of vegetation in urban environments is known.

Area Green areas: 2,500,000 m² (plus 500,000 m² undeveloped and 4,500,000 m² more planned in the current General Urban Planning Plan).

Area of areas with vegetation in these Green Areas: 1,360,000 m² (605,000 m² of generic vegetation, 270,000 m² of grassland, 385,000 m² of natural vegetation and 97,000 m² of land per vegetarian, the rest of the area corresponds to paved areas, areas of games, kiosks, etc.).

Trees: 59,000 units (of which 15,000 are palm trees).

Furniture in green areas: 10,400 items (5,600 benches, 425 picnic boxes, 300 planters, 2,950 bins, 1,000 swings and 200 sports items).

OTHER DATA CHECKED

Parks and roads under construction: 17.

Total number of Green Areas: 1,030.

Number of vials with trees: 650.

Greater Green Zone: Exploradores Park (Santa Ana Residential Estate): 250,000 m² and 2,050 trees.

Largest prairie extension: Cuesta del Batel: 20,000 m²

Number of playgrounds: 350.

Road with the largest number of trees: Antigua N-301 (Carretera Vieja de Murcia): 800.

Number of ornamental fountains: 80 (5,000 m² in total).

Total number of trees counted: 59,000 (15,000 are palm trees).

DATA EXPECTED TO OBTAIN ONCE THE GIS IS CONCLUDED AND REVISED:

In view of the verified data and with the planned revisions, it is expected that finally in the municipal area there will be an amount close to 2,000,000 m² of gardens and about 70,000 trees in roads (in which about 16,000 palm trees are included).
