Astus asks that "adult patients with disabilities not be infantilized" (26/02/2020)

The students of the Nursing Degree of the UCAM of Cartagena have heard this morning the recommendations of the professionals and users of this association that go through "having sensitivity and asking and informing people with disabilities directly when they are the patients".

This talk is included in the III Meetings of Socio-Health Resources for Patient Support of the Los Dolores Campus

The Campus of the San Antonio Catholic University in Cartagena this morning hosted a talk by professionals and users of the Guardian Association of People with Disabilities Astus and its Special Employment Center of Prolam, so that the students of the Degree in Nursing know first hand the good and bad experiences that its users have suffered in the health field.

In this sense, both users and Isabel Rodríguez, responsible for leisure and volunteering at Astus, have asked future nurses to have "sensitivity when treating people who have many capacities but have limitations, it is important that these people with disabilities , when they have to be taken care of by a nurse, they are the protagonists of their consultation, they take it into account and they involve it in the whole process of attention ".

Rodriguez explained that "there are cases in which if there is that sensitivity and cases in which" and stresses that above all "should not childish, which is what we usually fall to think that they are people with intellectual disabilities, we think that they are like children and not. "

Leisure problems in Cartagena

Work in the field of disability can be one of the possible job opportunities for these future nurses because, as explained by Astus, "in all Day Centers there must be one, especially when people are there more than part-time. They are in charge of primary care, stress control, sugar or medication. It could be a professional alternative for what would be advisable, in addition to the degree, experience with people with disabilities, for example, through volunteering "as the one offered by UCAM to its students.
