The European Agency for Food Safety relies on the UPCT for the training of researchers at the highest level (24/02/2020)

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena has been selected as a receiving center for the specialization of researchers in the evaluation of food risks.

The selection is not easy, there are a total of 15 organizations throughout Europe that have achieved it.

Nor is it easy for candidates to obtain a specialization scholarship from the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority).

Leonidas Georgalis, an epidemiologist specializing in infectious diseases, provided a brilliant curriculum and won one of 15 places among hundreds of candidates for the EU FORA program.

Since September 2019, he works with the professor of the Area of Food Technology of the UPCT, Pablo Fernández Escámez, in the laboratories of the Higher School of Agronomic Engineering to develop a systematized methodology that helps the microbiological control of pathogenic organisms that can grow in meat products.

He has specialized in studying the behavior of listeria and salmonella, two of the most dangerous bacteria for the population and that create more social alarm among consumers.

The training program also includes training courses in different European institutions.

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena has been an EFSA collaborating organization since 2018. Cooperation with EFSA is channeled through public consultations, the participation of the academic institution in the calls for scientific projects and as part of the European scholarship program for EU-FORA food risk assessment.

Recently, a conference organized by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) was held in Madrid to present the calls available for EFSA collaborating organizations.

Both Professor Pablo Fernández Escámez and the head of the Office of European Projects of the UPCT, Chus Legaz, attended this day in which the main lines of research in food safety were shared.
