MC will demand that the figure of Juan Fernández be honored and the Government will comply with the agreement to create a gallery of illustrious sailors (22/02/2020)

It has been a year since the municipal plenary approved an initiative of MC for the placement of a statue or bust in honor of Admiral Blas de Lezo, which would inaugurate the creation of a gallery of illustrious sailors in which, no doubt, by merits own must be the captain and pilot Cartagena, Juan Fernandez.

For this reason, the Cartagenerist formation will defend during the Plenary session next Thursday that the local government will initiate the pertinent steps to comply with the aforementioned motion and include the placement of a statue of the sailor and discoverer of Cartagena, Juan Fernández.

Likewise, it also contemplates that a tribute act be made to publicize its role in the history of Spain.

Juan Fernández, captain and pilot of the 16th century, was the protagonist of events such as the opening of new navigation routes, the discovery of New Zealand and the archipelago that today bears his name.

The deputy spokesman for MC, Jesús Giménez, said that "honoring the memory of illustrious people in our history is something that dignifies the action of any government, although it happens that right now in front of the City Council there are people who prefer to celebrate the customs of others municipalities and pay homage to diminished rulers who harm Cartagena, before and now. "

As a counterpoint to this action, he explained that "we will take advantage of this Plenary session to claim a historical figure related to Cartagena, in this case, the Cartagena captain and pilot, Juan Fernández, who gives his name to a main road of the Ensanche, but which many do not know who was and what were his deeds. "

Going deeper into the figure of the illustrious Cartagena has shown that "his exceptional talent led him to say that he was a sorcerer capable of navigating with diabolical arts, to the point of twisting the winds and tides at will, a matter which brought him to the court of the Holy Inquisition, "also remembering that" in his navigations he discovered the South Pacific archipelago to which he gives name, and it is practically unanimous that in his exploration of the southern hemisphere he discovered New Zealand, and that even reached Australia. "

The mayor has said that "Juan Fernández is one of the great forgotten Spanish men, who baptized with Hispanic names all kinds of geographical accidents across the five continents, and who died far away from their homeland."

"In Cartagena, it is known of its existence by a street that bears his name and little else. Not a minimum memory or a sad centenary when so many others of mediocre and unimportant characters are celebrated. So there are powerful reasons to honor and remember it. We will see if this time the local government decides to side with Cartagena, its history and its traditions, "concluded Jesús Giménez.
