Cartagena Piensa addresses the State as a modern Leviathan, with the philosopher David Soto (19/02/2020)

The auditorium of the Alberto Colao university residence hosts this Friday, February 21, the screening of the film Leviathan and its subsequent talk.

The film awarded in 2014 at the Cannes Film Festival is considered one of the greatest films of the decade by film critics and is a ruthless criticism of corruption in Russia.

The projection within the Cartagena Piensa program of the Cartagena City Council will feature the subsequent talk led by David Soto, PhD in Philosophy from the University of Bologna.

The synopsis of the film tells that on the outskirts of a small coastal town of the Barents Sea, where the whales sometimes approach the bay, a normal family lives: Nikolai, his wife Lilya and his teenage son Romka.

The family is persecuted by a local corrupt mayor, who is trying to take away the land, a house and a small car repair shop.

To save his house, Nikolai calls his old army friend in Moscow, who has now become a reputed lawyer.

As is known, Thomas Hobbes used the biblical figure of Leviathan to characterize his conception of the modern state.

The great sea monster described in the Book of Job came to represent order, peace, the unification of power and security.

Where there is no State, where the great Leviathan does not dominate through legitimate violence, the state of nature reigns, chaos.

However, their commitment ends peacekeeping.

In exchange for her, she demands unconditional obedience.

In the context of today's Russia, Andrey Zvyagintsev's story, Leviathan (2014), reveals in all its intensity, the struggle between the individual and a Hobbesian machine dominated by corruption and authoritarianism.

After the screening, there will be a talk with David Soto, who is a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Bologna (Italy) and Assistant Professor Doctor in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Murcia.

The act will be presented by María Jesús Morillas, a member of the Cartagena Piensa promoter group.

These events will take place at 7:00 pm in the "Philosophy and Cinema" program, in collaboration with the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Murcia.
