The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, received Juan Carlos Vélez Calderón and Isabel Belmonte on Thursday morning, February 13, two of the representatives of the Paco Martín Cultural Association, formed by friends and family of the creator of La Mar de Musicas, who died in the summer of 2018. During the meeting it was agreed to create the 'Paco Martín Award', within the festival.
An award, chosen by a jury proposed by the association and which will reward a young artist, who is standing out in global music, and to whom the City Council will facilitate his performance at the festival.
As explained by the first mayor after the meeting, “we want that, as with the great work that Paquito did to give life to the Sea of Music, this award will last over time and help us keep his legacy alive in Cartagena".
The City Council of Cartagena has been offering the La Mar de Músicaicas Prize since 2012, which distinguishes great music artists.
They have been awarded among others Omou Sangaré, Susana Baca, Omara Portuondo.
Juan Carlos Vélez stressed that "if Paco Martín's work is remembered for something, it is because he is a discoverer of new sounds and new artists, and this is precisely one of the reasons that led us to create the award."
The jury proposed by the association for this 'Paco Martín Award, revelation artist of global music', will be formed by specialized press and music professionals.
The appointment to deliberate the award of this edition will be in the coming weeks, in Madrid.
The artistic proposals will be raised by different national musical promoters.
The selected artist or group will perform at La Mar de Música 2020.
