The Port Authority finances projects to do an environmental monitoring of the Port (07/02/2020)

The Port Authority will finance three research projects within the framework of the APC-CMN Chair of Environment.

Specifically, through these projects an application will be developed to support the environmental digitalization of the Port, set up an information base on biodiversity for environmental management and analyze the spaces of the Natura 2000 Network. The Port Authority will finance each proposal with 15,000 euros.

One of the projects will be directed by UPCT researcher Antonio Guerrero.

In this case, a GIS tool will be developed to visualize the information from the environmental monitoring routinely carried out by the Port Authority.

In turn, a pilot campaign will be carried out in the bay of Cartagena using underwater robotics devices to obtain complementary information and an interactive history will be developed with the information obtained that combines texts, images and multimedia content in a web application, to facilitate interpretation scientific and to serve as a communication and dissemination tool for the environmental management work of the Port Authority.

UPCT researcher Salvador García-Ayllón will also evaluate the protected areas in the area of influence of the Natura 2000 Network that affects the Port Authority of Cartagena through the implementation of a retrospective GIS analysis and different geoprocesses on a Spatial Data Infrastructure .

Another of the projects will be directed by the UMU researcher José Francisco Calvo, who will develop a system of indicators of the natural environment integrated in the strategy of the port of Cartagena, for long-term environmental management, coupling various studies and monitoring of terrestrial fauna and coastal to other environmental and activity indicators, centralizing the design on the Island of Escombreras.

The funding that the Port Authority has dedicated to these calls has allowed research in recent years on issues related to underwater noise, the impact of air emissions from cruise ships in the Cartagena dock, analyzing the presence of microplastics or the role of Docks as a habitat for fish with rocky bottoms, among others.
