Campaign #LaLigaArcoiris (06/02/2020)

It has long been seen how sport has remained a space where LGBT activism (Lesbians, Gays, Trans and Bisexuals) has not yet managed to enter Spain practically in any way.

The FELGTB has launched the LigaArcoris for several years.

A campaign that invites local team players to propose to their players to wear rainbow laces (colors of the diversity flag) in their boots.

From the Association 'GALACTYCO Collective' we contacted the president of the albinegro club, Paco Belmonte, to propose the possible adhesion of the team to the campaign.

Proposal that the president accepted and which he decided to join immediately,

The campaign is carried out on this date because it is the closest to February 19, the day against homophobia in football, since the birth of Justin Fashanu is celebrated, the only professional European footballer to leave the closet while being active and He ended up committing suicide because of the homophobic pressure he suffered, according to GALACTYCO communication member José María García.

Garcia continues explaining that "Justin" Fashanu (February 19, 1961 May 2, 1998) was an English soccer player who played for a series of clubs between 1978 and 1997. His transfer to Nottingham Forest made him the first black player of a million pounds.

In 1990 Fashanu was treated with hostility after becoming the first footballer of a certain reputation who identified himself publicly as homosexual.

His coach, his teammates, even his brother denied him.

In 1998 he was interrogated by the US police.

when a 17-year-old accused him of sexual assault.

Police abandoned the case due to lack of evidence, but Fashanu committed suicide in May of that year, protesting that "he had already been convicted."

The president of the GALACTYCO Collective, Alberto Alba, values very positively the adhesion to the #LaLigaArcoiris campaign by the main football team of the city and is already studying to invite other clubs, from different categories and from other cities for next editions of this campaign de la Comarca, "is a special opportunity to try to end LGTBfobia in sports," says Alba.

The presentation of the #LaLigaArcoiris campaign will be held at a press conference next February 10 at the Cartagonova Stadium (FCC | Bussines Zone), at 12 noon.

With the presence of Paco Belmonte, president of the Club, and José María García, communication member of the GALACTYCO Collective.
