Samanta Schweblin opens the meetings of the most participatory edition of the Mandarache Awards (22/01/2020)

The cycle of meetings with the finalists of the Mandarache 2020 Prize is inaugurated, with the visit to Cartagena of the writer Samanta Schweblin, author of the disturbing 'Kentukis' (Random House Literature), a novel with which he is competing in this edition and will present These days before hundreds of young readers registered as a prize jury.

Samantha Schweblin's program began this Wednesday, January 22, in the UPCT boardroom, in a meeting with the media in which the Councilor for Culture, Youth and Equality, David Martínez, the author of the novel, has been present, Samanta Schweblinel, and the professor at the El Bohio Institute, Fulgencio López.

The Councilor for Culture, David Martínez, has released the official participation data of the Mandarache Award this year, with a total of 6,072 people enrolled in this category and 636 reading committees formed by almost 4,000 young people between 15 and 30 years old .

The Hache Prize with 326 reading committees made up of almost 2,000 teenagers between 12 and 14 years old.

And reading clubs for people over 30, consisting of 420 people from 30 reading clubs and literary gatherings.

This is the most participatory edition in the history of the Mandarache project, surpassing the participation data of the previous year.

More than 62,000 people have participated in this project in their 16 years of life, "we can boast in Cartagena to have the largest literary jury in the world," said the councilor.

The presenter of the meeting, Fulgencio López, explained that the students are the real privileged as readers and as people in training.

"The Mandarache prize is consolidated every year, leaving a mark and not only statistics, especially in students, the student already feels part of this award."

On the other hand, the author of 'Kentukis', Samantha Schweblin, expressed that she is very curious to make the meeting with the readers, since "from that age one reads in a very interesting way, with an energy and with an emotion that still It is not adjusted to anything, it is read in a very sincere way, I can not imagine a better jury than this ", were the author's words.

Subsequently, the main meeting held at the Paraninfo with six hundred high school students took place.

In the afternoon he will participate in a special session with the fifteen young people of the Mandarache Notebook literary workshop in the library of the National Museum of Underwater Archeology (ARQVA).

Finally, he will present his novel in a meeting with university students, reading clubs and open to the general public, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cajamurcia Foundation.

Their activities will end on Thursday 23 with two meetings: one at 09: 00h at the IES El Bohío and the last one at 11: 00h at the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation with two hundred high school students.

Samanta Schweblin, an Argentine writer based in Berlin, is one of the authors in the Castilian language with the most international repercussion and has to his credit some of the most important literary recognitions;

such as the Casa de las Américas Award (Cuba), the Juan Rulfo Prize (France) or the Tigre Juan Prize (Spain).

He has been a finalist for the Man Booker International Prize twice and in 2018 his novel Rescue Distance won the Tournament Of Books Award for the "best book of the year published in the United States" and the Shirley Jackson Nouvelle Prize.

Schweblin is the first of the three finalists of the present edition of the Mandarache to visit Cartagena.

In February it will be the turn of Miguel Ángel Hernández, who competes with his celebrated novel The Pain of Others, and in March the cycle will close with the visit of Tina Vallès, author of The Memory of the Tree.
