The Port announces a contest of ideas to give new urban uses to its maritime façade (23/12/2019)

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Beln Castejn and vice mayor, Noelia Arroyo, met this morning, December 23, with the new president of the Port Authority, Yolanda Muoz, after her inauguration.

Muoz has informed the mayor that a contest of ideas is going to be convened to design the surroundings of the port in order to favor its integration with the city.

The goal is to convert the port spaces into a large “Plaza Mayor” in Cartagena with new urban uses, where Cartagena and tourists can enjoy.

The mayor has valued this project very positively, highlighting that 'the integration of port spaces will be very beneficial for the municipality and that mobility and accessibility with new works will also be enhanced, which will be developed taking into account the proposals and ideas of the citizens'.

Likewise, he pointed out that 'the understanding between the Port Authority and the City Council is absolute, since both of them are moved by the objective of promoting the development of Cartagena.

Currently, works are being undertaken on the seafront of Alfonso XII with the aim of recovering this area as a space for the enjoyment of the citizen, making it a cultural and leisure reference.

The action, with a budget of more than 2 million euros, includes the change of street furniture, gardening and the replacement of street lamps to homogenize them, since there are currently 16 different types.

For its part, the president of the Port Authority has recalled the investment of recent years in the city in different actions such as the adaptation of the urban environment of Santa Lucia, from the Plaza de la Isla to the roundabout to Curra, with the aim of 'to improve the safety in the circulation through this road, and the integration of the same in the urban plot, giving this area a more urban and less port character, embellishing the entrance to the city'.

This space has become a benchmark for walking and sports.

Another issue addressed during the meeting is the purchase of land where the Franco Deposit and the Transportation Center are located for subsequent transfer to the Los Camachos ZAL.

The Port Authority has available 2.5 million euros to carry out the operation and the City Council has already agreed to transfer the right established in the agreement on the land to the new ones.

The Port Authority will not proceed to the occupation of the current land of Santa Luca of the City of transport and Deposit Franco until the construction and commissioning of the new facilities of the ZAL of Los Camachos is carried out and, therefore, , you can continue with the activity in St. Lucia until the transfer is effective.
