The improvement of infrastructure, digitalization, agriculture and the recovery of the Mar Menor, keys to the sustainable growth of the region of Cartagena (05/12/2019)

The gross added value of the Cartagena region accounts for a quarter of the regional total

COEC presented this morning a study that analyzes the impact of the region of Cartagena on the economy of the region in which it has been concluded that the key factors for achieving sustained growth in the region are the improvement of transport infrastructure , both of goods and people, the promotion of collaboration between the large tractor industries in the area and SMEs in the region, the search for solutions to water problems for agriculture, the modernization of companies with the promotion of digitization and recovery of Mar Menor conditions.

Under the title 'The region in the economy of the Region: reality and future', the Regional Confederation of Business Organizations of Cartagena (COEC), in collaboration with the Chair of Economic Studies Studies of the UPCT, have presented the results of this analysis in the XVII Conference for Business Leaders of the Region of Cartagena.

A study that this year has expanded its analysis of economic situation with the estimation of gross value added (GVA) generated by the municipalities of the region of Cartagena.

According to the employer, it is necessary information to analyze the economic evolution of the municipalities and for the correct decision making of economic policy with implications at the municipal and regional level.

The event has been inaugurated by the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, who has highlighted the figure of the entrepreneurs of Cartagena: "A dynamic business, alive and adapted to changes."

For his part, the Vice Chancellor of Innovation and Business of the UPCT, Alejandro Pérez Pastor, thanked the collation of COEC in the annual preparation of the economic report;

and the president of COEC, Ana Correa Medina, said that "it is necessary to urgently execute the measures to resolve the situation in the Mar Menor."

In this sense, Juan Carlos García Ródenas, a member of the Executive Committee of COEC, has analyzed the data of the services sector, commenting that tourism plays a fundamental role in the regional and regional economy.

"70% of tourism is focused on the Mar Menor with a catastrophic situation," stating that "the region of the Campo de Cartagena is a regional tourism tractor" and generates more than 35,000 direct jobs.

Regarding the behavior of the demand, the regional business confidence index has fallen by 3.28%, the biggest drop since 2013. Political instability, brexit and a possible increase in taxes have influenced these data, according to the Director of the Department of Economic Studies Studies of the UPCT, M.ª del Carmen Marco Gil.

On the other hand, the Vice-Dean of Quality of Sciences of the Company of the UPCT, Lourdes Badillo Amador, has commented on the behavior of the external demand stating that, although exports fall by 5.6%, there is a spectacular increase to China .

The panel related to the agricultural sector has highlighted the specialization in agricultural activities of the region of Cartagena.

"The agrarian future is conditioned by the shortage of water and labor, Brexit and the Mar Menor," said José Miguel Navarro Azorín, Professor of the Department of Economics of the Faculty of Science of the UPCT company, who It has also provided some solutions such as the reorientation of the activity towards more efficient and sustainable practices.

In this sense, José García Ruiz and Ángel García Izquierdo, members of the COEC Food and Agriculture Commission, have advocated for more investment that guarantees water and science to make the sectors compatible in order to continue with the agricultural activities of the region without harming the Sea Less.

In summary, the Region of Cartagena is expected to continue growing in 2019 at a faster rate than in 2018, contrary to what is expected in most of the northwest and island regions of Spain, although it moderates its growth with respect to 2017 The key factors for achieving sustained growth in the area are: the improvement of transport infrastructure, both passenger and freight;

the promotion of collaboration between the large tractor industries in the area (located mainly in the Escombreras Valley and the Camachos industrial estate) and the SMEs of the Region;

the search for solutions to the problems of water for agriculture, including new types of ecological and sustainable profitable rainfed crops;

the modernization of the companies of the Region, with a promotion of digitalization;

and the recovery of Mar Menor conditions to achieve environmentally friendly economic growth.

The Councilor for the Promotion of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, has closed the event highlighting the prospects for entrepreneurs in the region and affirming that Cartagena is included in the Mediterranean Corridor, "the Port of Cartagena is one of the four ports in Spain included with Barcelona, ​​Valencia and Algeciras, which will generate tens of thousands of jobs. "

The president of COEC has referred to the hard effects of DANA claiming that "it is urgent to act now, because 35,000 tourism jobs are at stake" and has concluded that sustainable growth in the region can be achieved by favoring infrastructure development and investing in training, innovation and new technologies, respecting the environment and with sustainable development goals.

The event, which has had the participation of dozens of businessmen and authorities, has been held in the Assembly Hall of the Port Authority of Cartagena.
