The world's largest expert in denitrification endorses the use of wood bioreactors at the UPCT (03/12/2019)

Denitrification with wood bioreactors as a solution to reduce nitrates that affect the Mar Menor has been this morning endorsed by the world's leading expert in this field, the researcher at the University of Illinois (United States) Laura Christianson, in the international technical conference organized by the Chair of Sustainable Agriculture of the UPCT.

"This denitrification system has been widely developed in the United States as the most efficient and economical tool to eliminate nitrates," explained the director of the chair, Juan José Martínez, responsible for the tests carried out on this line by the UPCT in its experimental agri-food station.

"Using the technique developed in the Polytechnic of Cartagena we are going to build 16 rafts to reduce around 90% of the nitrates of the water that circulates through the channels that flow into the Mar Menor," said the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, Antonio Luengo.

"Immediate solutions are not possible, but the UPCT Chair of Sustainable Agriculture is conveying hope to our farmers, who are exemplary," he said.

The leaders of the agricultural organizations COAG and Fecoam that promoted the Chair of Sustainable Agriculture, Vicente Carrión and Santiago Martínez, also participated in the inauguration of the day, who claimed to "row in the same direction to solve the problems" and "stop criminalizing the sector "because" we were part of the problem and we are part of the solution ".

For his part, Mario Urrea, president of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, an organization that also supports the Chair of Sustainable Agriculture, pointed to the option of pumping water from the Rambla de El Albujón to the El Mojón desalination plant.

The Vice Chancellor of Innovation and Business of the UPCT, Alejandro Pérez Pastor, finally said that "the agricultural sector is the main ally to combat climate change."

Specialists in the sector such as José Álvarez, Professor of the Department of Agronomic Engineering of the UPCT, Mercedes Guerrero, a researcher at the University of Murcia, and Carolina Díaz, a researcher at the UPCT, will present the design and data obtained from the pilot plant with wetlands and bioreactors for the treatment of agricultural drains in the Cartagena countryside.

As well as Francisco Torrella, professor emeritus of the Department of Genetics and Microbiology of the University of Murcia, and Eloy Celdrán, manager of the Irrigation Community Arco Sur Mar Menor, who have been responsible for closing the papers with the talk "Applied research to denitrification of brines in Arco Sur: infrastructure, substrates and microbial processes involved. "

The Chair of Sustainable Agriculture was born in March 2017 at the initiative of the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (Fecoam), the Coordinator of Farmers and Livestock Organizations (COAG), along with 13 companies and agricultural cooperatives of the Campo de Cartagena, with the support to the la Caixa and Aguainnova Foundation.
